VICTORIA - Wine
Scroll down for details ...

INTRODUCTION: The wine growing areas in Victoria are not concentrated in one part of the state and you would need to be a dedicated wine buff prepared to travel far and wide to view all of them during the course of one holiday.  If you are staying in Melbourne, the Yarra Valley and the Geelong and Mornington Peninsula vineyards are all only an hour's drive away.  Of these, the Yarra is by far the largest and arguably the prettiest, making a great day trip or even better a two day visit. The vineyards of north east Victoria form another good touring area, taking in the area around Rutherglen on the Murray River and the Glenrowan-Milawa area, within easy driving distance to the south.

The main wine growing areas in Victoria are ...
Yarra Valley
The beautiful Yarra Valley is only one hour's drive east of Melbourne. There are over 35 cellar doors in a very compact area and to an English eye, it is surprisingly green and lush with long views to the mountains. It produces good Champagne grapes, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for sparkling wines and also Pinot and Cabernet for great reds. Some of the best producers include Coldstream Hills, de Bortoli, Diamond Valley, Domaine Chandon, Lilydale, Mount Mary, St Huberts, Seville, Tarrawarra, Yarra Burn, Yarra Ridge, Yarra Yering and Yeringberg

Mornington Peninsula
Close to Melbourne, this area is one of the coolest wine production areas in Australia. Varieties include Chardonnay, sparkling wine and Pinot Noir from producers such as Dromana, Stanier's and Morrooduc Estate.

Geelong
Some of the best wines produced in this area are Cabernets, Pinot Noir and also some whites. Famous names include Idyll, Bannockburn and Prince Albert.

Rutherglen (Murray River)
Rutherglen is noted for its fortified wines and also for robust reds. Famous producers include Bullers, Campbells, Chambers, Morris Stanton and Killeen.

Glenrowan-Milawa
Well known for its abrasive reds and for liqueur Muscats, this area includes producers like Baileys, Brown Brothers, Koombahla and Whitlands.

Goulbourn Valley (A tributary of the Murray - between Mildura and Rutherglen)
This is one of Victoria's biggest premium wine regions and includes Michelton, Chateau Tahbilk and Delatite.

Bendigo

This area was planted in the 19th century but destroyed by phylloxera and has now been replanted with Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Cabernet. Well known names include Balgownie, Chateau Learman, Craiglee, Harcourt Valley, Heathcote, Mount Ida and Yellowglen.

Mildura (Murray River)
The lush, irrigated land along the Murray provides ideal growing conditions for all types of fruit and grapes. It is the highest wine growing region in Australia and it produces most notably brandies and fortified wines.

Great Western
This area in the Grampians region is the source of the base wine used in Seppelt's Great Western fizz but it also produces good reds. As well as Seppelt's, famous names include Cathcart Ridge, Mount Langi Ghiran, Best's and Montara.

Pyrenees
In south western Victoria, it produces Shiraz, Cabernet and Sauvignon. Major producers here include Dalwhinnie, Mount Avoca, Redbank, Taltarni, Warrenmang, Chateau Remy and Taltarni.

Henty
In the far south western corner of Victoria close to the Coonawarra over the border in South Australia.
