 QUEENSLAND - Wine
Scroll down for details ...

Queensland is not the first state that visitors think of for wines but in fact there are some good vineyards centred on Stanthorpe in the Granite Belt, the highland area in the south of Queensland , about 3 hours drive from Brisbane. (Locals are hopeful that, in time, this wine area will become as renowned as the Barossa).   Also rapidly establishing some impressive wines, and situated closer to the state capital city, is the hinterland immediately behind the Gold Coast, which includes the Canungra Valley Vineyards (pictured) and excellent nearby accommodation in the Lamington National Park at O'Reilly's Rainforest Guest House.

Granite Belt Wine Region ..
The Granite Belt is centred on Stanthorpe in South East Queensland's highland country, around three hours drive from Brisbane and it includes a small section of Northern New South Wales along the 'bump' in the border between the two States. At  915 metres above sea level, the climate is appreciably cooler than on the coast giving the area  what Australian friends call 'good sleeping weather'!  There is a strong Italian influence here, manifesting itself in excellent delicatessens and restaurants. The area has wineries at every turn including Ballandean Estate, Stone Ridge, Windemere, Kominos, Felsberg, Hidden Creek, Robinson's, Rumbalara, Bald Mountain, Granite Ridge, Bungawarra and Mountview.

Gold Coast Hinterland
Encompassing the rainforest of Mt Tamborine and the countryside of Albert River and Canungra, is Queensland's so-called 'boutique wine region'.  Many of the cellar doors and restaurants of this region operate from historic homesteads and buildings and offer the visitor a warm welcome and a relaxed and informative approach to their wine tastings. The area is around an hour's drive from the Gold Coast and less than 2 hours from Brisbane, making it an ideal day trip from either.   Details of accommodation in Brisbane, and on the Gold Coast, are in our City Hotels section.  Additionally you can click here for  details of the nearby O'Reilly's Guest House and Binna Burra Lodge.
The Gold Coast Hinterland Wine Country is claimed to be the fastest growing wine region in Queensland, and the high quality wines found in this area are rapidly making their mark in state and national wine shows. From the cooler climate of Mt Tamborine through to the milder climates of Albert River and Canungra Valley, the region allows a diverse range of grape varieties to be grown. These range from plantings of Verdelho, Chambourcin and Semillon, through to Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz and Viognier.
