Adelaide is the starting point for many of the South Australian
Wilderness and Outback tours and itineraries that we feature but
before venturing further afield, consider exploring the area
just to the south of the city which takes in the Fleurieu
Peninsula, the Coorong National Park and Kangaroo Island. At the mouth of the Murray River in South Australia is the Coorong National Park, an area of huge sand bars and lakes. The Coorong National Park is a special place of spectacular beauty. High sand dunes front the Southern Ocean and a long, narrow wetland complex connects to the lower Murray River and Lakes system. The area is rich in wildlife and in particular bird life, with numerous species of birds to be seen here. Click here for a list of birds commonly found in the Coorong. Next door to the Coorong is the beautiful, Fleurieu Peninsula with its quaint towns and rural Bed and Breakfasts. The Fleurieu includes the Deep Creek National Park and stunning coastal views. On the tip of the Fleurieu is Cape Jervis from where a passenger and vehicle ferry departs for Kangaroo Island. The Coorong, the Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island are all close enough to Adelaide for day trips and there are lots of opportunities for longer breaks, too. The Flinders Ranges is a region of stunning beauty and features unique Wilpena Pound, spectacular gorges, abundant wildlife and Aboriginal art. It is an area for a wide range of outdoor activities such as camping, bushwalking and bird watching. St Mary's Peak, the highest point of the Ranges, offers panoramic views after a challenging trek. The Flinders Ranges begin 3 hours drive north of Adelaide and can be explored by self driving or touring with a professional tour operator. There are scheduled flights to Port Augusta and Leigh Creek. Light planes can also land at Hawker, Wilpena Pound and Balcanoona (near the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary) in the Northern Flinders Ranges. The South Australian Outback is very accessible from Adelaide and features vast dramatic landscapes, Aboriginal culture and unique towns and people. The mining town of Coober Pedy is recognized as the largest producer of opal in the world with an estimated 70% of precious opal being mined here. It is famous for its underground homes (called dugouts), churches and other attractions. The area can be accessed by regular flights and coach services from Adelaide and a number of local tour operators explore the region. The legendary Ghan train passes through the region on its way from Adelaide to Alice Springs. |
