The Outback is a vast and special part of Australia, here stretching from western New South Wales into Queensland and South Australia.  Its extraordinary abundance of birdlife and animals and other wildlife and its rich Aboriginal culture are a constant reminder of the uniqueness of the Australian continent.  The landscape of western New South Wales is red-brown in colour and it is an excellent example of Australia's vast central desert region.  Broken Hill, known as the 'Silver City', is located 1,160 km/722 miles west of Sydney.  It is recognised as the centre of the New South Wales Outback and is very accessible by train, air and coach travel from Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.  The Indian Pacific, the train which operates from Sydney to Perth, passes through Broken Hill.  Taking over 18 hours to reach Broken Hill from Sydney, it is a perfect way to discover the Australian countryside.  Broken Hill is a remarkable and unusual township on the edge of the desert.  Since the 19th  century, it has been the world's largest silver, lead and zinc mine.  Underground mine tours are available.  Broken Hill is on South Australian time, which is 30 minutes behind New South Wales time.
