NULLARBOR Camping ADVENTURES

Adelaide to Perth (10 Days/9 Nights) or Perth to Adelaide (9 Days/8 Nights)

Scroll down to Price Panel ...
These trips for free spirited travellers give the opportunity to explore the vast landscape of the Nullarbor Plain, rather than whizzing across it by train, plane or express bus.  The route remains close to the coast for most of the way with opportunities to explore wonderful coastal scenery and beaches.  It is a part of Australia that should not be missed!  The camping is a mixture of national parks, camp grounds (with showers and toilets), bush camps (no facilities) and a farm retreat.
The maximum group number is 21, and the trip is a mixture of camping and accommodated nights.  On the accommodated nights you will stay in country pubs in basic tourist  class accommodation.  This is not a luxury trip but if you have the time and the right attitude, it beats conventional transport!

Nullarbor Adelaide to Perth Camping Adventure - 10 Day Itinerary

MEALS are included as shown: B (breakfast), L (lunch), D (dinner)
DAY 1 - Flinders Ranges
Depart Adelaide Bus Station at 7am. Journey into the rusty, rugged gorges, abandoned homesteads and ghost gums of the southern Flinders Ranges National Park. Experience life of the early pioneers with a camel trek.
Flinders Ranges Wildflowers © SATCHead north to one of earth's oldest mountain ranges, the Flinders Ranges where you will meet your camels for a trek through this gorgeous landscape. Camels have a long history in Australia as they were the premier form of transport in this harsh environment. Today Australia boasts the largest wild camel population on the planet. After an hour's trek around Devils Peak, depart and stop off along the way to take in typical rural towns before heading bush into the Gawler Ranges. At the end of the first day’s journey you arrive at Lake Gairdner - for a magical sunset that displays a contrast in colours to rival that of Uluru as the sun sets over the crystal white salt lake. The ideal setting for your first bush camp (LD)
DAY 2 - Eyre Peninsula
Continue your way through the Gawler Ranges to see abundant wildlife roaming in their natural environment. The tour then heads to the coast and begin to check out the stunning coastline of Venus Bay where you can see dolphins surfing in the waves.
After Venus Bay, visit the magnificent Talia Caves. Close to the caves are the Lake Newland sand dunes - these are the biggest sand dunes you will ever ride!
Overnight in hostel accommodation at Coodlie Park Farm Retreat - a unique accommodation and experience facility. Your hosts will take you on a nocturnal spotlighting excursion looking for Australia's National Emblems - kangaroos, wombats and emus  (BLD)*
DAY 3 - Eyre Peninsula
This morning head out to find some of Australia's best waves and spend two hours under the instruction of a qualified surfing teacher learning this most Australian of pastimes. That magic moment where you and the wave all become one as you surf towards the shore could be the beginning of a life long addiction.
For those wanting to experience one of Australia's most unique wildlife experiences of swimming with dolphins and sea lions (approx A$140) there is time at this stop to do so. This incredible optional wildlife experience involves a four hour boat cruise. Swim and snorkel amongst dolphins and sea lions - there is nothing that can parallel the feeling of communing with wild creatures such as these.
A short drive brings you to Murphy’s Haystacks, incredible granite rock formations sculptured into wondrous and weird shapes over millions of years. (BLD)
DAY 4 - Head of the Bight and Eucla
The Nullarbor plain and the Great Australian Bight are two of the icons of Australia. Today you are heading into some of the remotest country in Australia.
Cross the dingo fence which runs a staggering 5320km from the Bight through to Southern Queensland and head through into the Yalata Aboriginal lands. At the Head of the Bight you stop to take in the staggering sheer drop of the Bunda Cliffs where Australia suddenly and dramatically ends and drops into the ocean.
Whale watching Head of Bight © SATCIf travelling between June and October it is very likely you will get to see some giants of the ocean, the Southern Right Whales. A pod of about 100 whales come every year to this spot to give birth to whale calves. There is no need for a boat trip as the whales come right close to the sheer drop of the cliffs and use the sheltered water below as their resting spot.
This afternoon head towards Eucla with its locally famous wombat, camel and kangaroo road sign.  Eucla is a former overland telegraph town now largely buried by sand dunes (BLD)
DAY 5 - The Nullarbor
Travel further towards the west through some real outback country and it will certainly give you a sense of the size of the vast and ancient land. The Nullarbor Plain is the largest single piece of rock in the world and beneath this unique landscape is a honey comb cave and lake system. This night, you will be amazed by the sunset over the endless desert (BLD)
DAY 6 - Esperance
Esperance can seem like a huge metropolis after days out in the remoteness of the desert plain. The town is still remote but once you see the magnificent surrounds of the granite, bush and beach you can only wonder for how much longer this area can keep its quaint charm.
Get set for some of Australia's most beautiful scenery. This area of Western Australia has no less than 9 National Parks which is testament to its beauty and uniqueness. Take in the most spectacular of all, Cape Le Grand NP. Stunning blue seas mix with powder white beaches and secluded bays allow for stops and swims in what can only be described as a nature lovers paradise. In the afternoon, stretch your legs on Frenchman Peak which gives us a great overview of the bays and beaches and views to the islands offshore.
This area is too spectacular to experience in one afternoon so you have a full free day for you to take in some hikes, go swimming or relax at the beach (BLD)
DAY 7 - Esperance
Another full day to enjoy this beautiful spot and it is totally up to you how you want to spend your day.  There are some stunning coastal walks, you may like to swim, boogie board, snorkel, fish or just relax while lying on a pure white sandy beach - you might have to share the beach with a local kangaroo or two (BLD)
DAY 8 - Albany
Kangaroo on a Nullarbor Beach
Head on to Albany with its characterful pubs, friendly locals and stunning location.  Leaving the aptly named Lucky Bay behind, more lovely country is in front of you and your guide will pick a a spot in a national park for a hike. A variety of different eco systems are in front of you and each has something special to offer. The itinerary is  flexible as to which park you will visit as some are better than others depending on the time of year. Maybe a park with an abundance of wildflowers in the spring, or a forested area with flowing rivers and waterfalls in the heat of the summer. Every area has its peak at some point in the year.  Finish the day in the Stirling Ranges National Park (BLD)

DAY 9 - Valley of the Giants
Today travel along the WA version of the Great Ocean Road and seeing how the waves have an artistry all of their own when it comes to sculpture of the coast. The Natural Bridge and The Gap are just two of the highlights. Towering old growth forests once dominated the landscape of the South West and you can climb high to the tree tops to explore this beautiful eco system.
It is not all about the coast however as the inland areas also are home to some unique and incredible endemic life. The tingle forests once dominated this area. Their ability to grow hugely tall and amazingly straight made them targets for the emerging timber industry. Thankfully many areas are now protected after a long and bitter struggle between conservation and economic factors and you get to experience the majesty of the forest in the Valley of the Giants. We take a tree top walk through the canopy of these huge trees almost 60m up in the air.
Tonight there is a choice of camping in two national Parks – Conti, by the sea with evening sea breezes and cooler conditions, or Beetleup where natures birdlife is on full display. (BLD)
DAY 10
You finish your 4000km road trip by heading up the Western coast via Yallingup in the Margaret River region. Yallingup is a surfers paradise with strong but manageable waves that are a couple of sizes smaller than the death defying monsters its nearby Margaret River cousin. The tiny town is bordered by National Park. Surf is not the only reason this area is famed however. Wine and caves are the other big attractions and we visit one of the big show caves of the region to get the low-down on the underground world. See the crystalline features of the stalagmites and stalactites up close and personal.
Then get some insight from real experts on the country, the local Aboriginal people. This is a great opportunity to find out about the changes that have happened in the local environment and get a totally different perspective on the culture of the South West.
You have crossed the Nullarbor!Pull into Busselton on the home stretch to see one of the coastal boom towns and the opportunity to visit the underwater world there for one final wild encounter before the trip finishes up on arrival in Perth.
We recommend that you book a night for yourself in Perth tonight as although there are no formal activities planned it is usual for the group to get together and reflect on the big journey together over a few drinks and meal. We arrive late in the afternoon and flights should be booked no earlier than 9pm to be sure of making your flight out. There is no included accommodation this night. (BL)
