ITINERARY: Flinders Ranges Fly / 4WD Adventure
|
|
Departs: From Adelaide Monday to Friday (min 2 passengers) DAY 1: Adelaide to Wilpena Pound
Your journey starts with a spectacular scenic flight from Adelaide,
along the coast to Port Augusta. On your arrival, your 4WD guide, who
will escort you through the Flinders Ranges, will meet you.
|
After a short tour of Port Augusta, it is time to head north
through Pichi Richi Pass, following the Old Ghan railway line to Quorn.
Your destination for today is the Wilpena Pound Resort, nestled at the
base of this remarkable formation. The resort provides access to walking
trails into this remarkable region.
Overnight: Wilpena Pound Resort
with option to upgrade to a villa at Rawnsley Park Station
|
 |
|
DAY 2: Wilpena Pound to Arkaroola
After an overnight stay here, it is time to head into nature. The next two days will be spent exploring the ridges and the gorges of the Flinders Ranges. You will travel through the habitats of emus, kangaroos and the rare yellow-footed rock wallaby. Many species of birds also inhabit this region ranging
from brightly coloured parrots through to the magnificent wedge-tail eagle.
The landscape here includes some of the oldest terrain on earth. The ‘young’ outcrops only 560 million years
old (some parts are nearly 2 billion years old) hold some of the world’s oldest animal fossils. Adorning this ancient landscape is a wealth of Australian flora.
Delicate blossoms, native fruit, hardy desert plants and mighty gum trees all contribute to this most diverse environment.
The second night of your expedition will be spent at Arkaroola Village, in the very northernmost part of this region. Arkaroola is renowned for its 4WD tracks, including the famous ‘Ridgetop Tour’. On a clear night, which is most nights, the jewels of the Southern sky can be viewed not just with the naked eye, but also through telescopes at the Arkaroola Observatory.
Overnight: Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary
|
DAY 3: Arkaroola to Parachilna
Your third day starts with one of the most spectacular tours in the
Flinders Ranges – the ‘Ridgetop Tour’. This journey takes you
along a 4WD track that traverses some of the most diverse and dramatic
scenery in Australia.
|
 |
After lunch, it is time to head west. Your day of exploration takes you
through habitats of Australian wildlife, picturesque, old towns and finally on to the edge of the great plains of the Australian
Outback.
Tonight’s destination is the town of Parachilna – population was 6
at last count! It also boasts the Prairie Hotel. |
|
This old pub has an
international reputation for its cuisine and provides some of the
best Outback accommodation available in Australia.
Overnight: Prairie Hotel, Parachilna
|
|
DAY 4: Parachilna via Southern Flinders Ranges and Clare Valley
to Adelaide
Too soon the fourth day arrives and it is time to head south. There is
still some time for discovery. The unique scenery of the Outback, with
its red sand and great salt lakes provides a stunning contrast to the
rugged, ancient mountains and gorges of the Flinders Ranges.
You continue your journey down to the more gentle scenery of the
Southern Flinders Ranges, visiting quaint old towns like Melrose at
the foot of Mt Remarkable.
The destination for this afternoon is the delightful Clare Valley, home to some of Australia’s most famous winemakers.
After exploring this lovely area,
it is time to head back to Adelaide where your trip concludes at
approximately 6 pm.
