| The
old mining town of Broken Hill is located on the Barrier Ranges in the
far west of New South Wales, close to the border with South Australia.
The outback comes right up to the town making it an ideal base from
which to explore the region. Visitors who venture out from Broken Hill
will have the opportunity to see kangaroos, wallabies, emus, eagles,
pelicans, cockatoos and other wildlife. The weather throughout the year
– dry summers, mild winters and minuscule rainfall – is
magical. There are several
golf courses in and around town and numerous tennis courts. Broken Hill's
newly and beautifully renovated Royal Exchange Hotel
provides luxurious accommodation. The National Parks in the area are
extremely varied and include Mungo National Park, a part of the Wilandra
Lakes World Heritage Area. Ancient landscapes, aboriginal culture, unusual flora and
fauna and untouched wilderness can
all be found in the region.

Getting to Broken Hill |
There are regular air services to Broken Hill from Melbourne,
Adelaide and Sydney and the Indian Pacific train calls there twice a
week in each direction from Sydney to Adelaide and Perth. The tours below can well be combined with the Indian Pacific journey
between Sydney and Adelaide or Perth in either direction, adding an interesting and unusual segment
to your Australian holiday. If you are
travelling from Sydney to Broken Hill, there is also a 13 hour day service once
a week on an XPT train (similar to InterCity 125 trains in the UK) for those who don't
want to
miss any of the scenery, since the Indian Pacific train travels
this route partly overnight. This becomes particularly relevant
during the Australian winter months when it will be dark around 5.30 pm.

General Information about Touring around Broken Hill |
Although the tours below run all the year round, the weather can be very hot indeed in summer.
Winter is a perfect time to visit, especially in June and July, with clear, breezy, sunny days
in the region of 68-75F and chilly nights.
Fleeces and/or windproof jackets for the evenings are a must at this time of year, especially if you want to take in a barbeque or the spectacular Sculpture Symposium at sunset.
The Royal Exchange Hotel in the main street is a beautifully renovated former pub (quality fittings, not overdone and with more than a hint of Peppers/Laura Ashley) and
the tours featured on Truly Australia all use the Royal Exchange for any nights
in Broken Hill
You can of course book the Royal Exchange Hotel
separately as part of
your independent arrangements.

|
A range of first class vehicles is used, with all outback touring being by 4WD
vehicle, and each tour is accompanied by an expert driver/guide.
Passenger numbers per tour are limited to around 16.
Most tours incorporate a moderate amount of walking and getting in and out of
the vehicle but are not
strenuous.
You can choose a tour which begins and ends in Broken Hill
and then resume your journey on the Indian Pacific or by air, or alternatively
you can choose a tour which begins in Broken Hill and ends in Mildura or
Adelaide.
It is possible to self drive to Broken Hill if you have
the time available but you will miss a great deal without a knowledgeable guide
to interpret the outback landscapes, flora and fauna. At the very least,
self drivers should take the Broken Hill Outback Taster tour
which includes
accommodation for one night and one day's touring, as an introduction to the
area.
