Kakadu Real Camping by 4WD - 2 nights/3 days
Departs Darwin: 6.30 am May to November 2008 every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday       Max Number:  16 
This active, small group tour is designed for the adventure traveller looking for an experience rather than a sightseeing tour and a good degree of fitness and the ability to swim are essential. The aim is to enhance your knowledge of the Aboriginal way of life – their culture, mythology and bush tucker – as well as the local flora, fauna, eco-systems and environment. 
What to Bring: Sturdy walking shoes, swimming gear, hat and sunscreen, water bottle, towel and toiletries, torch, insect repellent, camera and film, pillow
Included:
Experienced tour guide,  meals, transfers from and back to the centre of Darwin, camping equipment, water bottle holders. 
Not Included:
Park entry fees, fuel levy and sleeping bag charge (see price panel below) are extra.  

NOTES:
  ~  The tour uses basic bush camps so that you can reach remote areas where few people travel. Swags are used for sleeping.  They resemble large, waxed cotton bags which you put your sleeping bag inside!  The exact itinerary is at the discretion of your experienced guide, bearing in mind the conditions at the time.  Where possible, the following highlights are normally included -

Itinerary
Day 1 - Darwin to Mary River and Kakadu National Park
Travel to the pristine Mary River Wetlands, home to the largest concentration of salt water crocodiles in the Southern Hemisphere, to enjoy a croc and wildlife cruise, then 4WD along the Old Darwin Road stopping at the huge termite mounds and scenic White Lily Billabong.  After lunch, continue through more beautiful wetland areas to Barramundi Gorge (Maguk), where for some hiking and enjoy a refreshing dip in the plunge pools.  Walk to Nawurlandja Rock to enjoy the sensational tropical sunset before heading for your overnight bush camp in Kakadu. Day 2 - Kakadu
An early start heading to Twin Falls, where you join a National Park operated boat and boardwalk experience up the stunning gorge to the waterfall where you can relax on the sandy bank.  Then travel to the awesome Jim Jim Falls, deep within striking escarpment country, and tackle the challenging climb to the top of the falls, enjoying fantastic views over Kakadu.  Continue on to your overnight bush camp in Kakadu for a well earned night's sleep! Day 3 - Kakadu to Darwin
This morning walk to Nungulawar art site before heading to Ubirr, an area rich in Aboriginal history, to check out the stunning vistas of the surrounding country. Here learn about ancient rock art depicting Dreamtime beliefs dating back over 20,000 years.  Call in at beautiful Annaburoo Billabong for one last swim before returning to Darwin, enjoying the impressive scenery along the way. Itinerary:

Day 1 - Darwin to Mary River
See the falls of Litchfield National Park before heading to the spectacular Mary River Wetlands, home to a vast array of bird life.  This afternoon look for 'crocs' and other abundant wildlife on a private river cruise.  Arrive at Point Stuart Wilderness Lodge where you spend the night in a private campsite. Day 2 - Mary River to Kakadu
The first stop today is Ubirr where you discover ancient Aboriginal rock art and take a climb to enjoy picturesque views.  Continue on to Maguk (Barramundi Gorge), where you hike to the plunge pools for a refreshing dip.  Stay overnight at a permanent camp within Kakadu National Park. (BLD)
Day 3 - Kakadu National Park
This morning , 4WD into the awesome Jim Jim Falls, hiking to the base of the falls and then continue on to Twin Falls.  Here, join a National Park operated boat and boardwalk experience up the stunning gorge to the waterfall and sandy bank.  Arrive at  Gunlom campsite in time to watch the vivid colours of the tropical sunset. Day 4 - Kakadu to Katherine Gorge

We start the day at Gunlom Falls, climbing to the top of the falls for stunning views before heading to Edith Falls, where we take a dip.

Arrive at your permanent campsite near Katherine Gorge in the late afternoon. (BLD)
Day 5 - Katherine Gorge to Adelaide River

Spend half a day canoeing or cruising (at own expense) the spectacular Katherine Gorge.  After lunch, relax in the clear waters of Douglas or Katherine Hot Springs (seasonal) before returning to Darwin. (BL)
