Much more than the famous road!  This walk covers a superbly varied section of the famous Great Ocean Road area - one that offers a range of experiences for the explorer on foot.  Walk along sheer cliff tops with dramatic ocean vistas.  Stroll along the clean, white, sandy beaches of the Southern Ocean.  Head inland through majestic forests, past cascading waterfalls, fern gullies and the brilliant wildflower displays of winter and springtime.  In stormy weather, experience the exhilaration of the wind in your hair as the huge rollers relentlessly pound the coast.  On hot, summery days, enjoy a refreshing dip along the way.  Wildlife lovers will not be disappointed - there are plenty of native animals to see including kangaroos, koalas, colourful birds and many nocturnal animals.  With its enormous variety, this holiday is a delight at any time of the year.  For a guided version of this walk click Guided Southern Ocean
  

7 day / 6 night Southern Ocean Walk Itinerary (Self Guide)

Day 1:
Starts in Torquay any time after 2pm. Accommodation: Torquay (D)

Day 2:
Begin walking at world famous Bells Beach, where Aussie surfers hang out year-round. Walk along spectacular cliff tops with panoramic ocean views.  Learn about the history and lifestyles of the local Aboriginal tribes on the 'Koori Culture Walk'. Today is your chance to see kangaroos in the wild! Accommodation: Anglesea (B,L)

Day 3:
  A wildlife bonanza!  Numerous native flowers have been identified on this walk.  How many different birds will you spot in the Coogorah wetlands?  What will you find washed up on the pristine, sandy beaches? As giant seacliffs tower overhead, the walk continues towards the quaint lighthouse in the distance.  You'll see colourful native parrots close up at tonight's bushland bed and breakfast.  Accommodation: Aireys Inlet (B,L,D)

Day 4:
A circuit walk today. Australia is fortunate to have so many clean, white, uncrowded beaches like this one.  Another special treat today is the ironbark forest - tall eucalypts with deeply rutted, very black trunks. Look out for the tiny native orchids that grow here in winter. 
Photo opportunities abound with extensive views over the coast and the Split Point Lighthouse, known locally as the 'White Lady'.  Accommodation: Aireys Inlet (B,L,D)

Day 5:
After a short vehicle transfer, walk inland along the cascading Sheoak River on the 'Waterfalls Circuit' trail - one of the region's best kept secrets. Descend into a mini canyon that is home to ancient tree ferns before reaching the dramatic Phantom Falls. Accommodation: Lorne (B,L,D)

Day 6:
Today's walk begins in dense eucalypt forest. Marvel at the huge Mountain Ash, the tallest flowering plant in the world. Step from rock to rock as the track criss-crosses pretty Erskine River on its climb to the spectacular Erskine Falls (pictured).  Back in Lorne, there's time to explore the tourist shops, craft stores and galleries.  Accommodation: Lorne (B,L)

Southern Ocean Self Guide Walk - GENERAL NOTES

DEPARTURE DATES:  Any day of the year for a minimum of 2 persons.

LOCATION: 
Commences in Torquay, a seaside resort town about 2 hours SW of Melbourne. Daily train/coach service from Melbourne.

GRADING:
Sandy beaches, cliff top and forest walking tracks. Mostly gentle terrain with a few short climbs. Walking is 60% easy, 35% moderate, 5% more strenuous.  Longest day has 5.5 hours walking (can be reduced).

ACCOMMODATION:
Bed and breakfasts, resort hotel

MEALS:
Included meals are noted in the itinerary - (B) Breakfast, (L) Lunch, (D) Dinner

WHAT IS INCLUDED:
Double/twin share accommodation, meals as per itinerary, wine with some dinners, luggage transfers, vehicle transfers as required for itinerary, information booklets, insulated lunch bag, map case, National Park fees, walking notes, maps

THE BEST TIME TO GO: December-February is usually warm to hot with excellent swimming weather. Book well in advance for January due to the summer school holidays. March-May is usually cooler, with long sunny days, perfect for walking. The winter months (June-August) are cool and sometimes stormy, providing exhilarating walking along the beaches. In winter the hills are covered with pink heath, Victoria's floral emblem. September-November is usually cool to warm and this is when most of the colourful wildflowers appear.
