The wonderful World Heritage rainforests of Lamington and Springbrook National Parks are less than two hours drive south of Brisbane, in the Gold Coast hinterland. Peaks here reach over 1100m and the steep untracked southern escarpment forms a natural border with the state of NSW.  Massive strangler figs, ancient Antarctic beech, red cedar, rosewood and booyongs tower overhead whilst hundreds of different species of vines, ferns and orchids shelter beneath. More than 160 species of subtropical birds will keep any bird lover engrossed.  With so much abundant native wildlife, this region offers a wealth of varied walking experiences.

Walk through lush sub-tropical rainforest with impressive stands of brush box and piccabeen palms. Climb the giant fig tree and explore the different levels of the rainforest on the Tree Tops Walk. Finish the day with a soak in the heated outdoor spa pool. Walking summary: 16km walking, approx 6-7hrs, well graded undulating terrain all the way, although the section cross-crossing the creek is uneven and involves creek crossings on boulders or by wading. Accommodation: O'Reillys Guest House.
Day 3:
Full day Lamington Traverse. Walk across the rainforest plateau on the Border Track to Binna Burra Lodge - at 25km it's a long way but the route is almost flat and the going is easy. At Warringa Pool you can enjoy a refreshing dip in a rainforest swimming hole. And Purling Brook Falls will take your breath away! Walking summary: 13km, approx 5.5-6.5hrs, a challenging day with a fair bit of up and down, some some creek crossings and rough tracks.
