COOLGARDIE Arthur Bayley discovered gold in 1892 at Fly Flat, which became Coolgardie, and started the gold rush of the late 1890s in the area. The town now has a fraction of its former population and its neighbour Kalgoorlie, about 45 km away is by far the larger and busier of the two. KALGOORLIE
Kalgoorlie is still a working goldmining town although the old
underground mines have now mainly given way to massive open cast pits.
There is also an excellent Museum of the Goldfields in town and Hannan
Street has beautifully restored federation style buildings.BOULDER In Boulder, 5km south of Kalgoorlie, is the Mining Hall of Fame. Boulder has largely been engulfed by Kalgoorlie but it does have some lovely restored buildings and there are also viewing platforms overlooking the nearby Super Pit open cast mine. The Royal Flying Doctor Service has a base here. |
