Western Australia covers a huge area of land, about a third of Australia, with around 2 million inhabitants most of whom live within 200km of Perth. India, similar in size to WA, supports a population of around 700 million. Western Australia is a long way from the main Australian population centres on the east coast (Perth is closer to Bali than it is to Sydney), however the advent of air travel and telecommunications have helped to dilute the sense of isolation that West Australians may have felt
