Mildura and the Murray River - Victoria

Irrigation from the Murray River enabled this dry area to become a major fruit growing region and Mildura grew up as its centre. It is a pleasant, low-rise, modern town with wide streets and access to Murray River trips makes it a popular destination with Victorians. Fruit growing includes grapes and there are a number of large wineries including Lindemans Karadoc Winery.  Mildura has a number of good standard motels and hotels.
The Murray River forms the border between Victoria and New South Wales and going east from Mildura, the Victorian towns of Echuca, Tocumwal and Yarrawonga are strung out at bridging points along the river. All have access to the Murray and Echuca in particular, once a large river port, has river trips on offer. The old port of Echuca has been restored and it is a popular local tourist destination. In the past, the draw for all these river towns was access to their New South Wales counterparts across the Murray where gaming laws were more relaxed than those of Victoria at the time.
Although in New South Wales, the Mungo National Park www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au(Mungo), with its dramatic Walls of China (pictured below), is best accessed from Mildura.
