Great Ocean Road - Victoria

The Great Ocean Road begins at Torquay just beyond Geelong and runs for 250 km, almost to Peterborough. Stops along the way include Lorne, Anglesea, with its much photographed golf course populated with kangaroos, Apollo Bay, Port Campbell, Warnambool and Port Fairy.
These seaside towns have accommodation ranging from smart, international hotels and retreats to bed and breakfasts and self catering.
Just after Apollo Bay the road leaves the coast and winds through the unspoiled Otway Ranges, returning to the coast at Princetown and then following the coast through the Port Campbell National Park www.parkweb.vic.gov.au (Port Campbell).  Another significant park along the Great Ocean Road is the Great Otway National Park www.parkweb.vic.gov.au (Great Otway).

London Bridge, between Port Campbell (pictured) and Peterborough, was a natural arch which famously collapsed in 1990, leaving an island remaining.
After Peterborough there are some excellent sandy beaches towards the South Australian border, particularly around Nelson at the mouth of the Glenelg River.
The Great Ocean Road makes an obvious self drive route from Melbourne, either as a circular route returning to Melbourne via the Grampians and Ballarat, or as part of the journey to Adelaide - see our section Self Drive Tours
A number of small local operators offer day trips or longer to the Great Ocean Road. Depending upon your budget you can choose personalised touring, small groups or conventional coach.
