Yorke and Eyre Peninsulas + Nullarbor - South Australia
Scroll down for details on the Yorke Peninsula, the Eyre Peninsula and the Nullarbor Plain SA

Yorke Peninsula

Today a rich cereal growing area, the Yorke Peninsula was settled after the discovery of copper ore deposits there in 1861, resulting in many Cornish miners flocking to the area. There are excellent beaches all round the peninsula, with safer swimming beaches on the western side. The old grain jetties on the eastern side are popular fishing spots. The south west tip of the peninsula is home to the wild and beautiful Innes National Park www.parks.sa.gov.au/innes (pictured).

Eyre Peninsula

'The Organ Pipes', Gawler Ranges, Eyre National Park, South Australia © SATC The Eyre Peninsula is further west, separated from the Yorke Peninsula by the Spencer Gulf. It is a huge area, defined by Whyalla in the east, the Western Australian border in the west, and the Gawler Ranges to the north - the rock formation known as 'The Organ Pipes' in the Gawler Ranges is pictured. The east facing coast has several small towns and good swimming beaches, including Tumby Bay which is near the lovely Sir Joseph Banks Group of islands.
The main town in the south is beautifully situated Port Lincoln, close to the Lincoln National Park and the Coffin Bay National Park for details of the various National Parks on the Eyre Peninsula, click www.parks.sa.gov.au (Eyre). The area is beginning to open up to tourism and several operators offer safari style touring but it is still undeveloped and well worth exploring.

Nullarbor Plain SA

Aerial view of Nullarbor Plain coastline, South Australia © SATC Nullarbor means no trees and accurately describes this vast, flat wilderness which stretches from just beyond Port Augusta in South Australia, 330 km from Adelaide, to Norseman in Western Australia. The Eyre Highway is sealed and follows the coast, having good views of the Southern Ocean to liven up the 2500 km journey to Perth. There is accommodation at conveniently spaced intervals along the way and a great sense of achievement when you get to the other side.  For details of the Parks and Reserves in the Nullarbor area, click www.parks.sa.gov.au(West+Nullarbor).
There are buses across the Nullarbor or you can take a small group tour and turn the trip into a holiday - see our page Nullarbor Adventure Perth-Adelaide or Adelaide-Perth
The Western Australia section of the Nullarbor Plain is covered on a separate page - Nullarbor Plain WA
