Great Barrier Reef - Queensland

The Great Barrier Reef runs along the north east coast of Queensland for around 2,000 km and covers a total area of 349,000 sq km. Almost the entire region (344,000 sq km) falls within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park www.gbrmpa.gov.au the largest of its kind in the world.
The Park contains 2,900 individual reefs and a total of 918 islands with a mixture of vegetation ranging from densely wooded to those without vegetation. Over 600 islands in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park are continental islands, the peaks of drowned mainland mountains, usually with fringing reefs. We have divided the islands into three sections- click on the appropriate link:
 * Northern Barrier Reef Islands - nearest to Cairns
 * Whitsunday Islands - accessed from Airlie Beach/Shute Harbour (Hardy Reef is pictured above)
 * Southern Barrier Reef Islands - nearest to Brisbane
