Some international flights also operate into Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta (only an hour or so from Brisbane by road) and into Cairns and Townsville, whilst there is a good network of domestic flights throughout the state.
The three main domestic airlines all operate into and out of Queensland airports:

Other internal carriers include:
Alliance Airlines Alliance Airlines who fly between Townsville, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

Getting about by TRAIN or COACH (Bus) in Queensland

Queensland Rail www.traveltrain.com.au operates seven services throughout QLD. The main line runs between Brisbane and Cairns which has a thrice weekly Tilt Train connecting service as well as the more leisurely Sunlander service four times a week.
The Countrylink www.countrylink.info passenger service between Brisbane and Sydney was suspended in May 2004 although it is still possible to make the trip by train from Brisbane to Murwillumbah in NSW, then bus to Casino and train again to Sydney.
The main rail terminal in Brisbane for long distance train services within QLD is the Roma Street Transit Centre – for timetable and fares visit QLD Rail Travel Centre www.qr.com.au.
As part of the urban rail network in the Brisbane area, including to Robina on the Gold Coast, Airtrain www.airtrain.com.au operates to and from Brisbane Airport – but be warned, the airport connections cease alarmingly early in the evening. The railway station adjoins the main terminal and whether arriving or departing, look for the lifts on the edge of the airport concourse to get to other levels.
Coachtrans www.coachtrans.com.au operates coach transfer services between Brisbane Airport and Central Brisbane as well as to the Gold Coast - a good alternative in the evening when Airtrain stops operating.
Greyhound Australia www.greyhound.com.au operates a network of bus services within Queensland and interstate, whilst Premier Motor Service www.premierms.com.au runs between Cairns, Brisbane and Sydney.

Getting about by RENTAL VEHICLE in Queensland

The leading vehicle hire firms are … Europcar, Budget, Avis, Thrifty, Hertz and Red Spot.  For motorhomes and campervans the main suppliers are Apollo, Britz and Maui.
For such a vast State, the roads are generally in surprisingly good condition, particularly along the coast and between the main inland centres. However in more remote areas in Australia a seemingly adequate sealed road can quickly deteriorate into a badly maintained one or a rugged gravel or dirt track. If you intend to explore, always use a good map to check the road type. Remember that vehicle hire companies insist on 4WD for unsealed roads.
The main motoring organisation in Queensland is The Royal Automobile Club of QLD (RACQ) www.racq.com.au

Toll Roads

Near Brisbane the Gateway Bridge and the Logan Motorway are Toll Roads.  Although both offer an electronic payment system (E-tag) for regular users, visitors can pay by cash when they use these roads - the operator is Queensland Motorways www.qldmotorways.com.au
We also have a separate page Transport in Australia which has information and advice about driving in Australia.
