The iconic train The Ghan
now operates between Adelaide in South Australia and Darwin, stopping en
route at Alice Springs and Katherine. The main roads in the Northern
Territory are covered by Greyhound Australia www.greyhound.com.au
including Alice Springs, Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kakadu. There are a number of coach tour operators with itineraries to and throughout the Northern Territory including those which offer regular services for backpackers including Groovy Grape www.groovygrape.com.au who have short and long trips between Adelaide and Alice Springs whilst Desert Venturer www.desertventurer.com.au runs between Cairns and Alice Springs. |

The leading vehicle hire firms are … Europcar www.deltaeuropcar.com.au
ThriftyNT, HertzNT, Avis and Budget. For motorhomes and campervans the
main firms are Maui, Britz and Apollo. Alice Springs and Kakadu can both be accessed by sealed roads from Darwin but remember that most car hire companies do not allow ordinary cars to be driven on unsealed roads and so if you intend to explore off the beaten track, you will need to hire a 4WD. If you want to drive into Aboriginal Land areas you will need a permit. The Northern Territory is remote and distances between food and fuel stops are invariably long, so travel well prepared even on the major roads. Extra drinking water and emergency food is essential as is hiring a reliable, well maintained vehicle - a breakdown could create all sorts of problems. A mobile phone is useless in most of the NT. The main motoring organisation in the NT is the Automobile Association of the Northern Territory (AANT) www.aant.com.au |
