The Northern Territory is more than twice the size of France and yet only has around 200,000 residents (about 1% of all Australians), about half of whom live in Darwin. This tiny population is one of the reasons that the territory has not yet achieved full status as a state. The isolation and extremes of distance and climate help give the Northern Territory an outback ‘New Frontier’ atmosphere. |
