4WD Self Drive Itinerary: Adelaide to Alice Springs via Wilpena Pound and Coober Pedy

Truly Refs. 1610 (Economy accommodation), 1611 (First Class accommodation)
Day 1
Depart Adelaide for the Flinders Ranges National Park and Wilpena Pound.  Rarely can wildlife be seen in such close proximity and in such profusion as in the National Parks of South Australia. The Flinders Ranges extend in an unbroken chain for 430 km and with a total area of 92700 hectares, this is one of Australia's major National Parks.
Overnight (2 nights):
Economy Wilpena Pound Resort (Aroona room)
First Class -   Wilpena Pound Resort (Aroona room)
Day 2
Day at leisure Wilpena Pound - time to explore the fantastic caldera

Day 3
Depart Wilpena Pound for Parachilna and its iconic outback pub, The Prairie Hotel. The hotel has been extensively renovated whilst retaining its special character, with design innovations and energy efficiencies to deal with desert living.  Parachilna has an official population of just seven but its remoteness adds to the pleasure of its one and only hotel.
Overnight:
Economy -  Prairie Hotel, Parachilna (Deluxe room)
First Class -  Prairie Hotel, Parachilna(Executive room)

Day 4
Depart Parachilna for William Creek.  The William Creek Hotel, on the Oodnadatta Track, is one of the most isolated pubs in Australia, and still serves a cold beer.  First settled in 1887, William Creek was originally a support station and operated as store and sly grog hop for camel drivers working on the Overland Telegraph Line. The hotel became licensed in 1935 and retains the charm of a real bush pub with old corrugated iron walls buckled by the heat.
Overnight:
Economy -  William Creek Hotel
First Class -  William Creek Hotel

Day 5
Depart William Creek for Coober Pedy.  In the heart of South Australia's outback is the opal mining town of Coober Pedy.  Most of the population live in underground homes or dugouts both as protection from the severe temperatures and because there is also a complete lack of timber for building in this desolate and harsh countryside.  Opals were first discovered at here in 1911 and today opal mining continues in the area with hundreds of mines operating.
Overnight (2 nights):
Economy Comfort Inn Coober Pedy Experience
First Class - Desert Cave Hotel
Day 6
Day at leisure in Coober Pedy

Day 7
Uluru (Ayers Rock) © Tourism Northern Territory Depart Coober Pedy for Uluru.  Travel north up the Stuart Highway into the Northern Territory to Uluru (Ayers Rock).  The Rock rises 348 metres from the desert and has a girth of 9.4km (5.8 miles).  Located in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Uluru is an important symbol of both ancient and modern Australia.  Because of its important Aboriginal history, the national park is one of only two places in the world recognised as a World Heritage Site because of living cultural significance.  It is jointly managed according to the rules of Anangu Law (the Tjukurpa).  Not surprisingly, it has a significant place in the Anangu's creation stories and Tjukurpa, and many of these stories relate to how the ancestral beings formed the Rock.
Overnight (2 nights):
Economy -  The Lost Camel Resort
First Class - Sails in the Desert
Day 8
Day at leisure at Uluru
Day 9
Depart Uluru for Alice Springs, where you drop off your rental vehicle.
