Day 1: Melbourne - Milawa (approx. 300 - 330 km)
Collect your hire car in Melbourne and travel north for an overnight
stop near to Victoria's Alpine Region. The most direct route from
Melbourne is via the Hume Freeway. A longer and more scenic route
to start on the Maroondah Highway to Lilydale and then
travel through Coldstream, Yarra Glen and Dixon's Creek in
the Yarra Valley on over the Great Dividing Range to Yea.
Continue via Bonnie Doon and Lake Eildon eventually joining the
Hume Highway at Benalla. Stop off at the small village of
Glenrowan, the setting for the famous bushrangers the Kelly Gang,
led by Ned Kelly, and their 'last stand' in the Glenrowan Pub in
1880. Back on the Hume, take the 'Milawa Gourmet Region' exit
where you will spend the night. |
Overnight: Lindenwarrah at Milawa for a 2 night stay including
breakfast.
Day 2: Milawa
A splendid opportunity to either visit some of the prestige
wineries in the Milawa region (such as Brown Bros, pictured)
or to spend the day in the the spectacular
Victorian Alps. Join in one of the organised activities or take a
picnic lunch and enjoy one of the bush walks in the Mt Buffalo National
Park.
Overnight: Lindenwarrah at Milawa including breakfast

Day 3: Milawa - Canberra (approx. 195km)
Drive to Canberra from Milawa. The drive offers you plenty
of roadside sights to keep you amused along the way, including the
monument to the local legend of the 'Dog on the Tucker box' north
of Gundagai (commemorating the folklore that an Aussie males best
friend is his dog).
The National Capital of Canberra, set around a lovely man-made
lake, has lots to interest the visitor.
Highlights
include the new Parliament House which is built into a hill,
the poignant Australian War Memorial museum and the Australian
Institute of Sport.

Day 4: Canberra - Sydney
(approx. 286 km)

including the National Gallery of Australia with its collection of
contemporary and Aboriginal art. On the way out of town you may like to
try the toboggan slide, before rejoining the Hume Highway to Sydney. The
journey to Sydney is only around 3 hours and is an easy drive
encompassing lovely scenery and historic towns. This evening you might
like to take in a dinner Harbour side, a harbour cruise, or dine one of
Sydney's many restaurants.
Overnight: Sydney Quality Hotel Cambridge including breakfast
Day 5: Sydney
Drop off your hire car at the city depot no later than you collected
