Truly Ref. 1605
|
Day 1: Melbourne - Apollo Bay (approx. 185 km)
Collect your rental vehicle in Melbourne and drive to Geelong,
Before joining The Great Ocean Road west of Torquay you may care
to visit Bells Beach (pictured), arguably the the most famous surf
beach in Victoria. Continue along the coast to Apollo Bay on The Great Ocean Road. En
route it is worth taking a look at the golf course in Anglesea
where the fairways are usually populated by kangaroos.
Overnight: Claerwen Retreat (including
breakfast)
|
 |
Day 2: (Great Ocean Road) Apollo Bay - Port Fairy (approx. 195
km)
Continue
your journey along the Great Ocean Road with many breathtaking
views on offer. The landscape is diverse ranging from the
rainforest area of Otway Ranges (most of which are part of the
Otway National Park) to the coast where the sea has carved
spectacular shapes from the limestone cliffs. Continue on
via Wreck Beach (pictured), the spectacular remains of the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard
Gorge.
This evening will be spent in Port Fairy, a charming and well
preserved pioneering coastal town. Located at the mouth of
the Moyne River, you can enjoy Port Fairy's range of restaurants
and cafes, local art and craft, festivals, local seafood and
quaint village atmosphere.
Overnight: Oscars Waterfront Boutique Hotel, Port Fairy (including
breakfast)
|
Day 3: Port Fairy - Mt Gambier - Robe (approx. 290 km)
This
morning depart Port Fairy and following the coastline and Highway
1 you will cross the state border into South Australia. The
southern most area of South Australia forms part of the largest
volcanic plain in Australia. Many fascinating, subterranean caves
and intriguing sink holes are open to visitors. The area also
incorporates the Coonawarra and Padthaway wine growing districts,
producing some of Australia's finest table wines. It is worth
spending time exploring Mt Gambier with it's famous 'Blue Lake' in
the crater of an extinct volcano (pictured). Continue on taking the coastal
loop via Beachport and and on to delightful seaside town of Robe for the night..
Robe was once one of South Australia's most important ports,
exporting wool and horses and the major arrival for thousand of
Chinese people on their way to the Victorian Goldfields during the
Gold Rush in the second half of the 18oos. They arrived here and
walked hundreds of kilometres to the fields to avoid the hefty
port tax imposed by the Victorian Government of the time. The area
is now a popular seaside resort.
Overnight: Ann's Place Bed and Breakfast, Robe (including
breakfast)
|
|
|
Day 4: Robe - Adelaide (approx. 330 km)
Make your way along the South East Coast past Kingston and on through the
wetland areas of the Coorong. Cross the Murray River before driving into
Adelaide. An attractive alternative to staying on the main
highways is to cross the Murray on a small car ferry at Wellington and
continue through the Langhorne Creek wine area and on through the scenic
Adelaide Hills.
Overnight: Majestic Roof Gardens Hotel, Adelaide (room only -
no meals)
Day 5: Adelaide
This morning return the car to either a city or airport depot - or add
additional nights in Adelaide to your itinerary.
