The area also incorporates the Coonawarra and Padthaway wine growing districts, producing some of Australia's finest table wines. It is worth spending time exploring Mt Gambier with it's famous 'Blue Lake' in the crater of an extinct volcanic cater (pictured). Continue on taking the coastal loop via Beachport and and on to delightful seaside town of Robe for the night.. Robe was once one of South Australia's most important ports, exporting wool and horses and the major arrival for thousand of Chinese people on their way to the Victorian Goldfields during the Gold Rush in the second half of the 18oos. They arrived here and walked hundreds of kilometres to the fields to avoid the hefty port tax imposed by the Victorian Government of the time. The area is now a popular seaside resort.
