Self Drive Itinerary: Melbourne to Adelaide via the Great Ocean Road, Robe and Kangaroo Island: 5 nights

Day 1: Melbourne - Apollo Bay  (approx. 185 km) 
Collect your rental vehicle in Melbourne and drive to Geelong, Before joining The Great Ocean Road west of Torquay you may care to visit Bells Beach, arguably the the most famous surf beach in Victoria.  Continue along the coast to Apollo Bay on The Great Ocean Road. En route it is worth taking a look at the golf course in Anglesea where the fairways are usually populated by kangaroos.

Day 2: (Great Ocean Road) Apollo Bay - Port Fairy

Continue your journey along the Great Ocean Road with many breathtaking views on offer. The landscape is diverse ranging from the rainforest area of Otway Ranges (most of which are part of the Otway National Park) to the coast where the sea has carved spectacular shapes from the limestone cliffs.  Continue on via Port Campbell (pictured), the spectacular remains of the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge. 
This evening will be spent in Port Fairy, a charming and well preserved pioneering coastal town.  Located at the mouth of the Moyne River, you can enjoy Port Fairy's range of restaurants and cafes, local art and craft, festivals, local seafood and quaint village atmosphere.

Day 3: Port Fairy - Mt Gambier - Robe (approx. 290 km) 
This morning depart Port Fairy and following the coastline and Highway 1 you will cross the state border into South Australia. The southern most area of South Australia forms part of the largest volcanic plain in Australia. Many fascinating, subterranean caves and intriguing sink holes are open to visitors. The area also incorporates the Coonawarra and Padthaway wine growing districts, producing some of Australia's finest table wines. It is worth spending time exploring Mt Gambier with it's famous 'Blue Lake' in the crater of an extinct volcano.
A beach at Robe  © SATCContinue on taking the coastal loop via Beachport and and on to the delightful seaside town of Robe for the night.. Robe was once one of South Australia's most important ports, exporting wool and horses and the major arrival for thousand of Chinese people on their way to the Victorian Goldfields during the Gold Rush in the second half of the 1800s. They arrived here and walked hundreds of kilometres to the fields to avoid the hefty port tax imposed by the Victorian Government of the time. The area is now a popular seaside resort.

Day 4: Robe - Kangaroo Island
(approx. 230 km) Depart Robe and make your way along the South East Coast past Kingston and on through the wetland areas of the Coorong. Continue to Cape Jervis and evening ferry to Kangaroo Island
2 nights Kangaroo Island: Standard - Aurora Ozone Seafront Hotel 
                                   : Superior - Stranraer Homestead including Breakfast


Day 5: Kangaroo Island to Adelaide
(approx. 110 km)
Depart Kangaroo Island on morning ferry to Cape Jervis and then drive to Adelaide, maybe spending time en route in the the scenic Adelaide Hills. Drop off your rental vehicle in Adelaide.
NOTE: 2WD vehicles are not to be driven on unsealed roads on Kangaroo Island.
