Self Drive Itinerary: Perth to Broome via Monkey Mia and Coral Bay -
14 nights
|
|
Truly Ref. 1608
|
Day 1 Perth - Cervantes (approx.
226 km)
Pick up your car at Perth airport and drive north on the Brand Highway to Cervantes. Check into your
accommodation and then explore the area. Nearby in Nambung National Park
are the Pinnacles, thousands of limestone pillars up to four metres tall
rising out of a stark landscape of desert sand.
Overnight: Cervantes Pinnacles Motel (including continental breakfast)
Day 2 Cervantes – Kalbarri (approx. 440 km)
Travel back to the Brand Highway through the towns of Eneabba and Dongara.
Visit Port Denison, then on to pioneering Greenough. Continue on through
the towns of Geraldton and Northampton to the township of Kalbarri.
Kalbarri and Kalbarri National Park are situated on a beautiful section of
the WA coast it features wonderful beaches, and amazing gorges.
2 nights: Kalbarri Palm Resort (room only - no meals)
Day 3 Kalbarri
|
 |
Spend the day exploring the Kalbarri National Park. The rugged terrain and
relative seclusion of the Murchison Gorge attracts many visitors. Short
walks provide moderately easy access to lookouts along the river gorge. A
key attraction is Nature’s Window, a natural rock arch that superbly
frames the upstream view, it is around 400 metre walk from the car park and
picnic area. For those who like more adventure the 8km loop trail
beginning and ending at Nature’s Window, provides a unique gorge
experience.
|
|
Day 4 Kalbarri - Monkey Mia (approx. 400 km)
Travel back onto the Brand Highway you will notice the scenery change and
the sense that you are heading further away from civilisation. Two hours
into the journey is a stop at the Billabong Roadhouse, this is a true
country roadhouse where the service is friendly with some effort, more
used to visiting Truck drivers than tourists. But it is the only stop
along the way, from here it is around two hours to Monkey Mia. Travel
through the town site of Denham onto the Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort, which
is located on a visually stunning and unique section of coastline. Monkey
Mia is known for it's Marine life and there are Dolphin feedings both
evening and during the day. Check with reception on arrival for current
times. The dolphin feeding is quite regulated by the rangers but still an
opportunity to see dolphins close up. They also visit the bay outside
feeding times, and as a side show is the pelicans and others that come in
for feeding time. However remember that both the dolphins and pelicans are
wild and their appearing is a very regular occurrence, but is not
absolutely guaranteed. However, Monkey Mia is a truly relaxing spot.
2 nights: Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort garden room (including full
breakfast)

Day 5 Monkey Mia
Have breakfast with the dolphins and then spend the day exploring this
world heritage area. You can visit the cliff top lookout at Eagle
Bluff, go to see the Stromatolites at Hamlin Pool (pictured) and enjoy Shell
Beach.
Day 6 Monkey Mia - Carnarvon (approx. 350 km)
Rejoin the Brand Highway and travel up to tropical Carnarvon, this is
another contrast and a small town that is a food bowl for the area, with
lots of fresh product - you might consider a tour of the banana and mango
plantation.
Overnight: Hospitality Inn Carnarvon (room only - no
meals)
|
 |
Day 7 Carnarvon – Exmouth (approx. 360 km)
Experience the North West Cape National Park with breathtaking views and
spectacular diving. Every year from April to July following the mass
spawning of coral, the world's biggest species of fish congregate in the
Ningaloo Marine Park. These are the Whalesharks! The chance to snorkel
with these gentle giants is the opportunity of a lifetime and visitors
from all over the world head to the Ningaloo Reef during Whaleshark season
(April-July). |
Overnight: Potshot Hotel Resort (pictured), resort studio room, Exmouth (room only - no
meals)
Day 8 Exmouth – Coral Bay (approx. 140 km)
Today drive a little way south down the coast to Coral Bay. Here the
Ningaloo Reef is only a few yards off shore and you can relax for a couple
of days and enjoy snorkelling, lazing on the beach and exploring.
2 nights: Ningaloo Reef Resort (room only - no meals)
Day 9 Coral Bay
A day at leisure for more exploration of the Ningaloo Reef, part of Western Australia's own
barrier reef; maybe take a cruise.
|
Day 10 Coral Bay - Karratha (approx. 640 km)
From Coral Bay, drive north to the iron ore mining centre of
Karratha. The name 'Karratha' is said to mean 'good country' in the
language of the local Aborigines.
Overnight: All seasons Karratha (including continental breakfast)
|
Day 11 Karratha - Port Hedland ((approx. 225 km))
Visit the nearby port of Dampier where the Burrup Peninsula has some
excellent Aboriginal rock carvings. Drive on to Port Hedland, the world's
busiest iron ore port. Tour the giant port facilities, and visit the nearby
ghost town of Cossack (pictured) with its beautifully restored colonial buildings
Overnight: All Seasons Port Hedland (including
continental breakfast)
Day 12 Port Hedland - Broome (approx. 605 km)
Continue north to Broome, calling in at Sandfire where the desert almost
touches the ocean. Enjoy the beauty of the Eighty Mile Beach, famous for
it's fishing and shell collecting. Experience the magnificent view and
re-charge your batteries by enjoying peace and solitude!
3
nights: Cable Beach Resort garden view studio, Broome (including full breakfast)
Days 13/14 Broome
Spend each whole day just relaxing and experiencing tropical Broome - maybe
