Self Drive Itinerary: Broome to Perth via Monkey Mia and Coral Bay -
11 nights
|
|
Truly Ref. 1698
|
Day 1 Broome – Port Hedland (approx. 610 km)
Depart Broome and head south to begin your journey towards Perth.
Travel along the edge of The Great Sandy, calling in at Sandfire where the
desert almost touches the ocean. Enjoy the beauty of the Eighty Mile
Beach, renowned locally for fishing and shell collecting. There are
some great scenic views along the way. Reach the town of Port
Hedland, a dynamic town and the world's busiest busy iron ore port - it
has a population of about 15,000 people and growing.
Overnight: Best Weston Hospitality Inn Port Hedland (including
continental breakfast)
Day 2 Port Hedland - Karratha (approx. 225 km)
You can tour the giant port facilities in Port Hedland and visit the nearby ghost town of
Cossack (pictured), where several of the original colonial buildings have
been carefully restored, before driving along the coast
to the iron ore mining centre of Karratha. The name 'Karratha' is said to
mean 'good country' in the language of the local Aborigines. The islands
of the Dampier Archipelago form a lovely backdrop to the coast here and
the Burrup Peninsula at Dampier (4WD access) has a huge amount of aboriginal rock art,
controversially now under threat from the offshore gas industry.
Overnight: All Seasons Karratha (including continental breakfast)
Day 3 Karratha – Coral Bay (approx. 636 km)
Continue South to Coral Bay, right on the reef! Coral Bay is a small
settlement that lies protected from the Indian Ocean by the Ningaloo reef.
It is Australia's only fringing reef. In contrast to other locations the
coral starts right at the water's edge. The fish and the coral are very
accessible to all. Fish and coral can be experienced either snorkelling or
on one of the Coral viewing boats.
Overnight: Ningaloo Reef Resort , Coral Bay (room only - no meals) for 2 nights
|
 |
Day 4 Coral Bay
Plenty to do today, snorkel on the reef, or take a glass bottom boat
cruise. Depending on the season, you may also swim with the
Whalesharks. The chance to snorkel with these gentle giants is the
opportunity of a lifetime and visitors from all over the world head
to the Ningaloo Reef during Whaleshark season (April - July). You can also explore the nearby
Cape Range National Park towards Exmouth
|
|
Day 5 Coral Bay – Carnarvon (approx. 250 km)
Head south and cross the Tropic of Capricorn today en route to Carnarvon, a small town
in the centre of a productive fruit growing area where you can tour banana
and mango plantations.
Overnight: Best Western Hospitality Inn, Carnavon (including
continental breakfast)
Day 6 Carnavon - Monkey Mia in Shark Bay
(approx. 350 km)
|
Today you can explore the Shark Bay World Heritage area as you make your
way to Monkey Mia. You will pass Hamelin Pool with its amazing
stromatolites, fossilized mounds of algae and sediment (pictured), and then as you
reach the small, pleasant holiday town of Denham the road follows the edge
of the Francois Peron National Park where you can visit the old Peron
Homestead. Check into your accommodation at Monkey Mia. Monkey
Mia is known for it's Marine life and there are dolphin feedings both
evening and during the day. Check with reception on arrival for times. The
dolphin feeding is quite regulated by the rangers but still an opportunity
to see dolphins close up. They also visit the bay outside feeding times,
and as a side show is the pelicans and others that come in for feeding
time. But do remember that both the dolphins and the pelicans are
wild, and although their appearing is very regular it is not absolutely
guaranteed.
Overnight: Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort (including breakfast) for 2 nights
|
Day 7 Monkey Mia
Have breakfast with the dolphins and spend the day at leisure here,
perhaps visiting the cliff top lookout at Eagle Bluff or exploring Shell
Beach. Another option is to take a sunset cruise (extra cost).
|
Day 8 Monkey Mia – Kalbarri (approx. 400 km)
Depart
Monkey Mia and travel south to the coastal town of Kalbarri, on the
Murchison River. The coastline around Kalbarri is wonderful and has a
history of shipwrecks along the shore. Don't miss the fabulous cycle path
along the coast, taking in Eagle Gorge, Natural Bridge, Pot Alley,
Rainbow Valley and Red Bluff. There is also great surf at Jakes
Corner.
Overnight: Best Western Kalbarri (including continental breakfast) for 2 nights
Day 9 Kalbarri
Explore Kalbarri's coastal cliffs and the Murchison River's dramatic
gorges, perhaps visit the tropical and exotic parrot habitat, look around
the town. In the surrounding Kalbarri National Park, the Murchison River
has cut a dramatic gorge extending for over 80 km and the river has also
created wonderful coastal cliffs as it reaches the sea. The park has
good sealed access and lots of picnic and walking opportunities.
Whale Watching has become a past time in the Australian spring with the
Humpbacks migrating along the coast. You can see them from the Kalbarri
coastal cliffs or take a whale watching cruise in this spectacular region
of Western Australia - if you want to get close to these beautiful
creatures a whale watching cruise is essential. The seasonal migrations of
humpback whales bring them close to the Kalbarri shoreline in winter and
spring.
|
Day 10 Kalbarri - Cervantes (approx. 440 km)
Head South along the Indian Ocean coastline via Geraldton. Travel back to
the Brand Highway through the towns of Dongara and Eneabba. Check into
your accommodation and take some time to explore the area.
Overnight: Best Western Cervantes (including continental breakfast)
Day
11 Cervantes - Perth (approx. 226 km)
Cervantes is on the edge of the Nambung National Park. Before you
leave the area visit the park to see the Pinnacles, thousands of limestone
pillars, up to four metres tall, rising out of a stark landscape of desert
sand.
Drive South on the Brand Highway, through to Perth.
Overnight: Mantra on Hay Hotel (including breakfast)
Day 12 Perth
This morning return the car to the city or airport depot.
