Day 1 Broome – Port Hedland (approx. 610 km)
Depart Broome and head south to begin your journey towards Perth. Travel along the edge of The Great Sandy, calling in at Sandfire where the desert almost touches the ocean. Enjoy the beauty of the Eighty Mile Beach, renowned locally for fishing and shell collecting. There are some great scenic views along the way. Reach the town of Port Hedland, a dynamic town and the world's busiest busy iron ore port - it has a population of about 15,000 people and growing. Overnight: Best Weston Hospitality Inn Port Hedland (including continental breakfast) Day 2 Port Hedland - Karratha (approx. 225 km)
You can tour the giant port facilities in Port Hedland and visit the nearby ghost town of
Cossack (pictured), where several of the original colonial buildings have
been carefully restored, before driving along the coast
to the iron ore mining centre of Karratha. The name 'Karratha' is said to
mean 'good country' in the language of the local Aborigines. The islands
of the Dampier Archipelago form a lovely backdrop to the coast here and
the Burrup Peninsula at Dampier (4WD access) has a huge amount of aboriginal rock art,
controversially now under threat from the offshore gas industry.Overnight: All Seasons Karratha (including continental breakfast) Day 3 Karratha – Coral Bay (approx. 636 km) Continue south to Coral Bay, where the coral of the Ningaloo Reef starts right at the water's edge. Overnight: Ningaloo Reef Resort , Coral Bay (room only - no meals) for 2 nights |

stromatolites, fossilized mounds of algae and sediment (pictured), and then as you
reach the small, pleasant holiday town of Denham the road follows the edge
of the Francois Peron National Park where you can visit the old Peron
Homestead. Check into your accommodation at Monkey Mia. Monkey
Mia is known for it's Marine life and there are dolphin feedings both
evening and during the day. Check with reception on arrival for times. The
dolphin feeding is quite regulated by the rangers but still an opportunity
to see dolphins close up. They also visit the bay outside feeding times,
and as a side show is the pelicans and others that come in for feeding
time. But do remember that both the dolphins and the pelicans are
wild, and although their appearing is very regular it is not absolutely
guaranteed.Overnight: Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort (including breakfast) for 2 nights |

Day 8 Monkey Mia – Kalbarri (approx. 400 km) Depart

Murchison River. The coastline around Kalbarri is wonderful and has a

along the coast, taking in Eagle Gorge, Natural Bridge, Pot Alley,
Rainbow Valley and Red Bluff. There is also great surf at Jakes
Corner.Overnight: Best Western Kalbarri (including continental breakfast) for 2 nights Day 9 Kalbarri Explore Kalbarri's coastal cliffs and the Murchison River's dramatic gorges, perhaps visit the tropical and exotic parrot habitat, look around the town. In the surrounding Kalbarri National Park, the Murchison River has cut a dramatic gorge extending for over 80 km and the river has also created wonderful coastal cliffs as it reaches the sea. The park has good sealed access and lots of picnic and walking opportunities. Whale Watching has become a past time in the Australian spring with the Humpbacks migrating along the coast. You can see them from the Kalbarri coastal cliffs or take a whale watching cruise in this spectacular region of Western Australia - if you want to get close to these beautiful creatures a whale watching cruise is essential. The seasonal migrations of humpback whales bring them close to the Kalbarri shoreline in winter and spring. |
