STAR HOTEL, WALHALLA, Victoria
Scroll down for Price Panel ...
Set in a deep valley on the edge of the Victorian Alps, about a 2 hour drive from Melbourne, Walhalla has an extraordinary history of massive boom and tragic bust.  It mixes a wild bush environment with the colonial style of the gold era ... exotic trees and cute miners' cottages line the winding main street in a steep narrow valley.  The Star Hotel is located on a bend in the street opposite a superbly preserved Rotunda Bandstand and just down from the Fire Station Building (which quirkily straddles a stream).  Run in a very hands-on fashion by the very personable Michael Leaney, The Star Hotel is a particular favourite of the directors of Truly Australia - a 2 or 3 night stay here as a part of any itinerary is highly recommended.  In July and August you can even Cross Country Ski nearby.

The Gold Mining Era in Walhalla ..
Walhalla was one of Victoria’s great gold mining towns in the 19th century.  At the height of the gold-era, Walhalla was a bustling frontier town with over 2,500 residents.  More than 75 tonnes of gold was removed from Cohen’s Reef which runs deep below the town.  In its heyday, Walhalla was home to 10 hotels, 3 breweries and 7 churches.  The Star Hotel, located at the Junction directly opposite the historic Band Rotunda, was Walhalla’s most famous gold-era hotel.  It was the terminus for the Cobb & Co. Coach that serviced Walhalla until 1910 when the railway finally arrived in town.  The Star was always the focal point for Walhalla along with the IOOF Hall next door.  The original Hotel and Hall were destroyed by fire in December 1951.  The newly opened Walhalla’s Star Hotel is a faithful reconstruction of the original facades of the Star Hotel and IOOF Hall and incorporates all modern amenities and facilities in luxurious surroundings - all excellently done.
