A sheep and cattle property located 40 km from Canberra, Australia's national capital,  Avalanche has been operating as a rural retreat since the late 1980's.  The property  has won Australian and local Canberra tourism awards and has received international recognition for its quality of service, hospitality and personal service.    
The main homestead sits on the spur of a mountain overlooking a valley and affording truly spectacular views.   Whilst having a drink in the gazebo next to the large pool, guests can watch wild kangaroos hopping out of the hills in the evening.   All the bedrooms have private bathrooms, king/queen or extra large twin beds and are tastefully furnished.  The lounge and dining area of the homestead is a baronial hall furnished with the finest Australian leather seats, antique French polished Australian wooden tables, antique solid silver tableware, original oil paintings and a great selection of early Australian books in the library.
   
Getting to Avalanche ...
Avalanche is just 40 minutes from Canberra, the capital of Australia.  Canberra is about 3 hours drive south west from Sydney. If you do not wish to self drive, road transfers can be arranged from Sydney, Canberra or Melbourne in luxury, air-conditioned 4WD vehicles.

The highly winsome Frank and Faye Biddle are your hosts.  In true country fashion, guests become part of the family. You are welcome to become involved in the daily activities, or simply to seek the privacy and solitude so easy to find at Avalanche.  In summer, the homestead's large swimming pool is particularly appealing.

 

Activities at Avalanche ...
Include -
  • Watching the homestead dogs work sheep and cattle 
  • Shearing demonstration where guests can have a go at shearing themselves with assistance 
  • For those that do not ride, there is the 'Iron Horse', an air-conditioned 4WD Landcruiser to drive guests around the property
  • Morning tea may be Billy Tea with a special damper bread in the middle of the forest or at the fishing hut with only the sound of the birds - really unique
  • At night join the 4WD Safari using spot lights to see the wild native animals in their natural habitat
  • Swimming in the pool; forest walks through more than 2000 acres.
Horse riding - is available as an optional extra at modest extra cost; this enable you to mustering sheep and cattle on horse back and ride through the grand eucalyptus forests, teaming with kookaburras, parrots of all descriptions, cockatoos, honey eaters, whip birds and occasionally eagles soaring overhead.  In the bush there are kangaroos, wallabies and wombats 
 
  
Accommodation and Dining at Avalanche ...
There are seven rooms each with a private entrance off the verandah and each with a private bathroom (some are en suite and some are external to the room).
Each evening there is a candlelight dinner, including wine, in the grand dining room which is shared by family and guests.  It is an informal get-together complemented by Faye's excellent cooking. The widely travelled Biddle family and their equally cosmopolitan guests often find these dinner conversations a highlight of the day. Unless you are on a package which includes the eveneing meal,dinner is approx. A$45 per person payable direct to the homestead.
