East Gippsland coastline
In the south eastern corner of Australia is a superb wilderness region known as East Gippsland.   Home to wombats, wallabies, koalas, gliding possums and over 300 species of birds, this is an area with abundant wildlife and dramatic scenery and yet is rarely visited by international tourists.   The incredible diversity of East Gippsland has been recognised by the creation of one of the largest concentrations of National Parks in Australia, covering over 1.5 million hectares.

Koala in its natural habitat Day 1
Depart Melbourne between 8.30 and 9.00 am to the East Gippsland region.  Following a briefing from the guide you visit the internationally acclaimed RAMSAR wetlands of the Lakes District.  Look for bird life before travelling to ferry to an island sanctuary in the wetlands which hosts a thriving colony of koalas. Your overnight stay for the next three nights is in Orbost, at Snowy River Homestead Bed and Breakfast (or similar). Dinner tonight is in a local restaurant before travelling deep into a eucalypt forest with a spotlight in search of three species of rare gliding possums. (LD)
Day 2
Travel high into the mountains of East Gippsland to the towering eucalypt forests where giant gum trees soar into the sky - the tallest flowering plants on earth. Your guide provides detailed information of the formation of these mighty forests, and helps you search for lyrebirds, parrots and honeyeaters. Next take a walk in the fascinating transitional zone between the eucalypts and the rainforests before moving into a great stand of lowland rainforest. Bird life is abundant. Finish the day with a classic Aussie cook-out (fireside) dinner at your Bed and Breakfast. (BLD)

Wombat in East Gippsland Day 3
Activities today are at a great river estuary on the Wilderness Coast. Walk beside the forest lined lakes and rivers of a wilderness estuary in search of sea eagles, parrots, swans and other bird life. Also visit a quiet beach with a complex dune system and frequently see beach and ocean-going birds. After a picnic lunch take a walk through the nearby coastal forest in search of bush birds and huge goanna lizards. At the end of the day visit a refuge for injured and orphaned Australian wildlife and learn about their rehabilitation. (BLD)
Day 4
Depart East Gippsland after a relaxing breakfast. On the way back to Melbourne visit the Krowathunkoolong Keeping Place, an informative Aboriginal Cultural Centre in Bairnsdale, then transfer to Melbourne arriving in the afternoon. (B)
