In the south eastern corner of Australia is a superb wilderness
region known as East Gippsland. Home to wombats,
wallabies, koalas, gliding possums and over 300 species of
birds, this is an area with abundant wildlife and dramatic
scenery and yet is rarely visited by international tourists.
The incredible diversity of East Gippsland has been recognised
by the creation of one of the largest concentrations of National
Parks in Australia, covering over 1.5 million hectares.

Day 1
Depart Melbourne between 8.30 and 9.00 am to the
East Gippsland region. Following a briefing from the guide you
visit the internationally acclaimed RAMSAR wetlands of the Lakes
District. Look for birdlife before travelling to ferry to an
island sanctuary in the wetlands which hosts a thriving colony of
koalas. Your overnight stay for the next three nights is in Orbost, at
Riverview Bed and Breakfast. Dinner tonight is in a local restaurant
before travelling deep into a eucalypt forest with a spotlight in search
of three species of rare gliding possums. (LD)
Day 2
Travel to the great estuary of the Bemm River on the wilderness
coast. Cruise the forest-lined lakes and rivers of this wilderness
estuary in search of black swans, musk ducks, sea eagles and
kingfishers. Visit an remote beach with a complex dune system before a
picnic and walk through the nearby coastal forest. After dinner there is
more spotlighting before returning to your bed and breakfast
accommodation.

Day 3
View towering eucalypt forests while your guide provides
detailed information on the formation of these forests. Traverse
the fascinating transitional zone between the eucalypts and the
rainforests before moving into a great stand of Cabbage Tree Palms.
Bird life is prolific in these areas. Head back to the coast at
Cape Conran, a place steeped in Aboriginal history and home to the
common Wombat (pictured). Dine outdoors tonight (weather permitting) and then go spotlighting in
search of wombats and possums before heading back to the township
of Orbost and your accommodation for the night. (BLD)
Day 4

transfer by road or rail back to Melbourne, arriving late afternoon
