'Nature' or 'Wilderness' section could be complete without a mention of
O'Reilly's, which has been welcoming guests for more than 85 years. Set in the
Lamington National Park, 2 hours by road south of Brisbane or 90 minutes
west from the Gold Coast, the guest house is 3,000 feet above sea level
and enjoys cool mountain air and spectacular views. O'Reilly's is
ideal for families as well as couples and offers a range of activities, including walking
tracks, pool, guided bird walks, spa and massage, guided night walks, a
flying fox across a picturesque creek and a treetop walkway.
O'Reilly's excellent accommodation and easy access to Brisbane and the
Gold Coast make it a convenient add-on to a Queensland beach holiday or
a visit to family and friends around Brisbane. O'Reilly's gives a splendid
taste of nature and wilderness in friendly surroundings, with every comfort provided. |

| History ... how O'Reilly's began |
In 1911, when the O’Reilly brothers
scrambled up the mountain determined to establish dairy farms near the
crest of the McPherson Range, the thought of nature based tourism and
pioneering of the local tourist industry, could not have been further
from their minds.
It may have been the luck of the Irish, but the O’Reilly selections
happened to be part of one of the most beautiful and rugged areas of
Australia. In 1915 the lush rainforest that surrounded the O’Reilly’s
became the Lamington National Park, effectively ensuring their isolation
for evermore.
The O’Reilly boys carved a track down the side of the mountain to
enable their packhorses to carry out the cream cans and return with
supplies. This track soon became popular with local tourists and
naturalists who came to stay with the O’Reilly's to study the natural
splendour of the newly declared park. The increasing flow of
visitors requiring accommodation prompted the establishment of a
guesthouse which opened its doors for Easter, 1926. They have
remained open ever since.

| Lamington National Park ... the setting
for O'Reilly's |
 |
This world heritage National Park covers
an area of 20,200 hectares of varying forest types ranging from
temperate beech forest high on the border ranges through the warm
sub-tropical rainforest, to the dry eucalypt forest of the lower
valleys. The Park offers 160km of walking tracks to over 500 waterfalls
and panoramic mountain lookouts.
The rainforest surrounding O’Reilly’s contains a myriad of wildlife
including many reptiles and mammals.
The local mammal list contains 68 native species, ranging in size from
the Grey Kangaroos of the valleys to the Common Planigale, a tiny but
ferocious carnivore noticeably smaller than a mouse. The Red-necked
Pademelon, Long-nosed Bandicoot, Sugar Glider, Mountain Brushtail and
Common Ring-tail Possums are regularly seen around the guesthouse.
The rainforest is also home to a spectacular array of sub-tropical
birds (over 160 species), including many that are highly
regarded by birdwatchers. In addition to this, the nearby
eucalypt forest holds a number of interesting species that
won’t venture into the rainforest habitat.
A two or three night stay is recommended to make the most of
the area. |

Activities and Facilities at O'Reilly's
|
 |
To help guests make the most of their
stay in the mountains, friendly O'Reilly's staff are on hand at breakfast
each morning with alternatives for the days activities. Half and
full day guided walks and 4WD bus trips to one of the many scenic spots
ensure suitable outings for everyone. A new addition to
activities at O'Reilly's is the flying fox. Imagine flying
through the air for 180 metres whilst 25 metres above the ground.
Its
bound to get your blood pumping. A most popular stroll is the tree
top walk; a series of nine suspension bridges which takes the
visitor high into the rainforest canopy. Two observation decks, the
highest 30 metres (100 feet) above the ground, give the visitor a
commanding view of life in the tree tops.
For those of you that want to do nothing you can laze by the plunge
pool, sweat it out in the sauna, or relax in the hot tub while you enjoy
the magnificent views of the western ranges. Or better still why not
indulge yourself with a massage to soothe those aching muscles or just
to help you unwind completely. The plunge pool, children's wading pool
and hot tub are all heated for year-round enjoyment, and the hot tub is
covered so that it can even be enjoyed when it is raining.
The evening entertainment takes many forms; fireside sing-alongs,
wide screen audio visuals, walks to the glow worm gully, spotlighting
excursions, bush dances, BBQs under the stars and slide presentations
relating to the story of the Stinson aircraft crash and subsequent
rescue by Bernard O'Reilly in the early days of the guest house.
The O’Reilly's Guest House of today is more than a mountain resort, it
is an escape from the hectic world where the traditions of yesteryear have been
faithfully preserved and built on, and where a holiday can be enjoyed
with the best nature has to offer.
