SHOPPING in Australia

The currency in Australia is dollars and cents – Australian dollars and cents. Credit cards are widely used throughout Australia and ATM cash dispenser machines are available in most towns and shopping centres.
Shopping hours vary from state to state, however as a general rule most big department stores in major towns open 9am – 5.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am – 5pm on Saturday. However in country areas, it is still common for shops in small towns to close on Saturday afternoons. Often there is late night shopping on Thurs or Fri until 9pm. Some states have Sunday trading and major stores can open 10am – 4pm. Duty free shops are located in city centres and at international airports.

Visitors can also claim a refund of the goods and services tax (GST) and wine equalisation tax (WET) on goods purchased in Australia, provided such goods are part of hand luggage when leaving the country - for details visit www.customs.gov.au 

BUSINESS HOURS in Australia

General office business hours are 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday. Banks are normally open 9.30am-4pm Mon-Thu and 9.30am-5pm on Fri. Post offices are open 9am-5pm Mon-Fri. Most major post offices (GPO’s) in capital cites and selected outlets in large shopping centres also open on Saturday morning. Stamps are often available at front desks of hotels and motels and at some retail outlets.

Public Holidays in Australia

Apart from Christmas Day and Boxing Day, New Years Day and Easter other national holidays are Australia Day (26 January), Anzac Day (25 April), Queen’s Birthday (in June – not in WA). Other public holidays can be exclusive to a particular state (for example, the first Tuesday in November is Melbourne Cup Day holiday in Victoria). 
School holidays vary somewhat from state to state but generally are from mid-December to end-January, the 2 weeks after Easter, 2 weeks in June-July and 2 weeks in September-October.
