The Murray River is within easy driving
distance from Adelaide. The small town of Murray
Bridge, the nearest point on the river, is just over an hour's
drive away whilst Mannum, the departure point for a number of
cruises, is around an hour and a half. The Murray is the world's fifth largest river and flows more than 3,000 kilometres across one third of the Australian continent from its source in the Snowy Mountains of NSW, to the Southern Ocean near Adelaide. In pioneering days, over 200 paddle steamers used the Murray as a main highway transporting goods and people. Now it provides a wonderful way to see see the vast landscapes and prolific wildlife of South Australia The wide channels of the Murray are often lined with cliffs and then willows and gum trees give way to wetlands and waterways perfect for exploring. Long stretches of unspoiled country with huge sheep stations are punctuated by small, old river towns. The river is wonderful habitat for wildlife and a large variety of native animals can be seen. Summers are hot with maximum temperatures between 27C and 29C for December, January and February. Winters can actually be very pleasant with mild sunny days and frosts at night, as you go inland, with the added benefit that you will often have the river to yourself! |
