At 123 kms long, Fraser Island is the world's largest
sand island and you will need a 4WD vehicle to drive on it. The
island offers accommodation and
camping options, walking tracks, freshwater lakes, surf beaches, sand
dunes, coloured cliffs and rainforest. Fraser is home to around
230 species of birds and 25 species of mammals. The island is
reached by air, and by sea ferries from Noosa North Shore or Hervey Bay on
the mainland and
pick up services are available throughout the Sunshine Coast and
Brisbane. From August to October, the Hervey Bay area becomes a
playground for herds of giant yet gentle Humpback whales as they make
their way from the Antarctic.

| Getting to Fraser Island ... |
| Most international
passengers would take a ferry crossing from the Urangan Boat Harbour at
Hervey Bay to Fraser Island, although it is possible to fly by helicopter
from Hervey Bay. Hervey Bay can be accessed easily
by:

- The Tilt Train from Brisbane's Roma Street Station (Roma Street
Transit Centre)
- Self driving - there is secure parking near the harbour for approx
A$5 - A$10 per day, payable at source.
- By bus from Brisbane (Roma Street Transit Centre) and from the
Sunshine Coast resorts
- Flying - direct Sydney to Hervey Bay flights now operate
with Virgin and Jetstar

Kingfisher Bay Resort - where to stay on Fraser Island
|

Kingfisher
Bay Resort and Village is located on the sheltered, western side of Fraser Island.
This large, modern resort has been designed to blend harmoniously into the unique island
environment and has been developed on the site of old logging yards, now
obliterated by careful replanting of native shrubs and trees. The
beach here is calm and sheltered, fringed by the rainforest, and with
the Kingfisher accommodation almost completely hidden in the trees. The
hotel has excellent restaurants, pools and facilities and has a choice
of hotel rooms in the main complex or villas in the grounds containing
spacious, well appointed apartments.
Kingfisher has its
own fast ferries several times a day with its own landing stage only a few hundred yards from reception.
You can arrive or depart by tilt train to Brisbane on
the same day if you are staying at Kingfisher. Passengers wishing
to arrive and depart by air would need to check flight times at the time
of booking but both same-day arrivals and departures by air should
be possible for Kingfisher guests. 4WD hire can be arranged for
Kingfisher guests and Kingfisher also has its own 4WD coach tours of the

Departing from Hervey Bay
The 2 and 3 day trips use deluxe permanent camping facilities, Frasers at Cathedral Beach,
on the eastern side of the island in the north. The
safaris are served by a ferry from Hervey Bay which lands at Moon Point.
Safari prices include meals, national park fees and exploring Fraser Island's
gems.

If you are taking a 1, 2 or 3 day camping safari and staying at
Cathedral Beach, you will need overnight
accommodation in Hervey Bay (see Where to stay in Hervey Bay below)
before and after your trip, unless you are
self driving and have made other arrangements. The safaris depart from the Urangan Boat Harbour
at 8.25 am and return between 5.30 and 6.00 pm. These times do not
allow you to arrive or depart by Tilt Train, bus or plane from Hervey Bay to
Brisbane on the same day.

The Kondari Resort is located 3 km from
Urangan Boat Harbour and provides very pleasant motel
style accommodation in spacious cabins with en suites,
set around a natural lagoon. There are two
swimming pools, barbeque area and a half size tennis
court plus a restaurant serving good food.
The Kondari courtesy coach will pick up and transfer
from the bus station and the airport by prior
