Independently owned Bloomfield Lodge is
a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Hugging the spectacular coastline of far North Queensland, the Daintree Rainforest is a profusion of mammoth palms and ferns; the roots of strangler figs creep stealthily around the trunks of unsuspecting giants, orchids bloom against mossy bark and liana vines festoon the upper reaches of the canopy. One fifth of Australia's bird species
reside in this area, from cockatoos and red-cheeked parrots to honeyeaters and lorikeets, while some of the world's largest and most beautiful butterflies flutter amongst the branches.
Beautiful timber accommodation cabins of varying shapes and sizes are reached from the main Lodge through lush gardens, blossoming with bougainvillaea and hibiscus.

| Location and Access -
Bloomfield Lodge ... |
Set in a remote location beside the Coral Sea in
the Daintree Rainforest, Bloomfield Lodge is a two hour journey
from Cairns by car, private plane and launch.
The flight to Bloomfield normally departs Cairns at 9.00 am and you should plan to stay
in Cairns the night before. The 2 hour journey from Cairns to Bloomfield is a thrilling experience. It begins with the courtesy car which takes guests to the VIP lounge at the Hinterland Aviation Terminal, looking out over the International Airport.
A 30 minute scenic light aircraft flight then follows the dazzling Queensland coastline over the fringing reefs and tiny islands of the Coral
Sea. Landing on an Outback airstrip, guests are met by Bloomfield's friendly staff and escorted on the short trip by unsealed road to the banks of the Bloomfield River. From here, the launch cruises downriver to the sea and across Weary Bay to Bloomfield Lodge,
almost unseen in the rainforest.
The final touch in this unique little adventure comes as the boat lets
down wheels and is pulled ashore for the driest of landings and a
cooling drink, whilst the magic of Bloomfield takes over. The return flight from Bloomfield to Cairns normally arrives in Cairns
at 11.00 am.

| About Bloomfield Lodge ... |
Bloomfield Lodge has a wonderful, remote
location all by itself on the Coral Sea with no neighbouring properties and
it has been carefully designed to blend in with the beauty of the surrounding
rainforest, with views out over the blue waters of Weary Bay.
Bloomfield can only accommodate 36 people at a time and the bar operates
on an honesty system with guests recording their own tally of drinks
during their stay. In keeping with the atmosphere at this retreat,
there are no televisions in the rooms (although there are telephones),
no mobile phone coverage and no internet access. There is a library and a lounge with TV. |
 |
|
The main Lodge building has a bar and dining terrace overlooking the pool and deck area. The office and games room are also housed here. Accommodation is in natural timber cabins, elegantly furnished and located on sites carefully chosen to make the most of the views and the quirks of the landscape. Bloomfield has an intimate, relaxed
atmosphere with no pressures, no
formalities and no interference from the outside world. Dress is
informal and activities are optional (though very popular). Despite its remoteness, creature comforts are not sacrificed at
Bloomfield and service is always friendly and thoughtful, but never intrusive.
During the stinger
season (usually October to May) swimming is only possible on boat
excursions to the Great Barrier Reef or in the swimming pool at
Bloomfield.

| Activities at Bloomfield Lodge ... |
| Bloomfield offers a number of wonderful excursions which are very popular with guests. |
Guided Rainforest Walk
(included free in 3 Day Package)
This is one of the most memorable of the Bloomfield activities offering a fascinating insight into the secrets of the tropical rainforest. Lasting around 2 1/2 hours, the walk is led by an experienced guide who will introduce you to the innumerable species of indigenous flora and fauna, from strangler figs to the mischievous wait-a-while plant, lace monitor goannas to Ulysses butterflies. There are several other walking trails in the area and Bloomfield staff are happy to offer advice to those guests wishing to explore unescorted.
Bloomfield River Cruise
(included free in 3 Day Package)
A relaxing trip of around 2 hours along the delightful Bloomfield River as far as the local Aboriginal community at Wujal
Wujal. Learn about the river's history and the ecology of the mangroves - look out for flying foxes, crocodiles and a host of magnificent
birds.
|
 |
Bloomfield Falls (half day)
A short journey upstream by boat and jeep takes you via Wujal Wujal to the delightful Bloomfield Falls. Fascinating in the dry season and quite spectacular in the tropical wet, the falls provide a beautiful setting for a picnic lunch.
Roaring Meg Falls (full day)
A glorious 2 hour journey by 4 Wheel Drive through startling scenery brings you to these spectacular falls
(pictured) on the upper reaches of the Bloomfield River. Gushing down a rugged valley between the Thornton and McDowall Ranges, the waters are clear and cool, perfect for a refreshing dip.
|
|
|
Cooktown (full day)
This trip, by boat and car, provides a fascinating insight into this old pioneer town named after Captain James Cook. It was here that in 1770, after running aground on nearby Endeavour Reef, Cook was able to make the necessary repairs to his vessel before continuing his famous voyage of discovery. Jettisoned cannons and anchors from his ship were recovered only as recently as 1969 and are now on display, along with a large collection of items from the subsequent
gold rush era, at the James Cook Museum.
Hope Islands (full day)
Bloomfield's most popular excursion is a full day trip aboard The
Bloomfield Explorer, to Hope Islands. Part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, these beautiful islands are perfect for fishing, snorkelling the reef or just relaxing on the deserted beaches.
Other Activities
Boat fishing
Reef snorkelling (seasonal)
Tour of Aboriginal cave paintings at Laura (30 mins each way by air)
Guided bird watching
