Departs Daily at 6.45 am for 7.00
am departure, subject to

This is a good way to see something of the Fleurieu Peninsula and its
spectacular beaches. Perhaps you might choose to do it as a relaxing way
of orientating yourself on arrival, particularly before launching into a
self-drive itinerary, or you might simply have a tight time budget but
want to see more of the area than the centre of Adelaide.
The
day starts at 7.00 am as you depart from Adelaide and travel south
towards the spectacular coastline towards Cape Jervis, at the
southernmost tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula. You will visit the
Deep Creek Conservation Park. This Park is 4000 hectares of cliffs,
heath, wild orchids and ferns growing by gully creeks and is home to a
multitude of kangaroos that feed in the open grasslands. The rare
southern brown bandicoots and western pygmy possums that live here only
come out at night but you'll see brightly coloured parrots in abundance.
From here, you go on to visit Victor Harbour. This historic town
was once a major whaling centre and there is much evidence of these
bygone days. With the hunters gone, the whales have returned and from
time to time, can be seen frolicking in the coastal waters around Victor
Harbour. A visit to Urimbirra Wildlife Park is a special
experience. This is one of the few places where you can see a koala at
close quarters. In addition, this sanctuary is home to birds, including
parrots, cockatoos and eagles as well as dingoes, wombats and even
crocodiles. Next stop is the historic town of Goolwa. It is
steeped in history, both of modern settlers and the original Aboriginal
inhabitants. This was a thriving port in the days when paddle steamers
traded up and down the Murray River. Here the Murray River, Australia’s
largest waterway, is separated from the sea by only a very narrow strip
of sand dunes.
At
Goolwa, you will make your way down to the beach. This huge expanse of
sand stretches as far as the eye can see towards the mouth of the Murray
River. The distance is hidden in the mist of the surf as it rolls in
from the Great Southern Ocean. From Goolwa, it is time to start
heading home. Your return journey takes you through Strathalbyn, settled by Scottish immigrants,
and one
of South Australia’s oldest towns. The scenic drive through the hills surrounding
Adelaide brings you back home to complete your day of surf, sand and
scenery.
