Bed and Breakfast COTTAGES in GOOLWA
in South Australia at the mouth of the Murray River
Scroll down for details and prices ...
Pelican at Goolwa, South AustraliaGoolwa is a fascinating town to visit.   Right at the mouth of the Murray River its name means 'elbow' in the local Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal language, referring to the bend in the waterway as it sweeps around Hindmarsh Island.   A sprightly 140 year old port town, Goolwa is full of the smells and sights associated with boats.   Paddle steamers, cruisers and polished wooden river boats are in festive mood and pelicans squat atop bollards, supervising the activity whilst keeping a sharp eye on successful fishermen and chip-eaters!   There is a bric-a-brac market and Australia's first railway, originally constructed to facilitate the export of the Murray/Darling's wheat and wool, now  steams to nearby Victor Harbour.   Goolwa, a mixture of old and modern, makes a good base from which to take cruises on the Murray River and to explore the unspoiled wilderness of Coorong National Park.
