Cruises to the Coorong National Park begin
at the attractive old port of Goolwa and make an excellent day trip from
Adelaide. The Coorong is a special place of spectacular beauty.
High sand dune systems front the Southern Ocean and a long, narrow wetland complex connects to the lower Murray River and Lakes
system. The area is rich in wildlife, in particular
bird life with more than 200 species in the region.

The Coorong National Park is
internationally significant as a migratory wader and waterfowl refuge,
is of spiritual significance to the local Ngarrindjeri people and has
archaeological sites attesting to Aboriginal occupation and use of the
area over many thousands of years. Ecologically focused tours use the
Park with specially designed water craft, cruising into the shallow
lagoons.
The Coorong is a long, shallow lagoon more than 100 km in length
that is separated from the Southern Ocean by a narrow sand dune
peninsula. The Lakes Alexandrina and Albert form the mouth of the River
Murray and are comprised of fresh to saline waters. They form a natural
wetland system with associated shoreline marshes at the mouth of the
River Murray and are connected with the Coorong. The area also contains
a number of ephemeral salt lakes and examples of ephemeral carbonate
lakes of national and international significance. The Coorong's fragile
ecology depends on getting a mix of fresh water from the Murray and sea
water from the ocean. This wetlands system is important as a habitat for
many animals and provides a refuge, particularly for waterbirds of which
there are many species of waders and waterfowl. Click here for more
details of Coorong Birds. The area, and particularly the Coorong
itself, is noted for its extensive aboriginal sites both historic and
geological sites. Some of the northern islands within the Coorong lagoon
are not part of the Coorong National Park or Game Reserve but are
reserved for use by Aboriginal people. Professional fishing occurs
both along the beach and in parts of the wetland complex.
