ITINERARY: Sydney - Alice Springs via Uluru ('Flinders Ranges and Red Centre')

Day 1: Sydney – Hay
Depart Sydney and travel along the Hume Highway via Goulburn  the Riverina district to Hay.  Two of the main towns in the Riverina, Griffith and Leeton, were planned by Walter Burley Griffin who also planned the national capital, Canberra.  Enjoy a welcome drink this evening with your Tour Director and travelling companions..

Day 2: Hay – Adelaide Today leave Hay for Adelaide, travelling via vast hay plains (pictured below, left) and the large provincial centre of Mildura, located on the Murray River in Victoria (see picture below, right). Cross the South Australian state border and travel to Adelaide.  Accommodation: Stamford Plaza, Adelaide. (BD)

Day 3: Adelaide – Flinders Ranges 
See some sights of Adelaide on an orientation tour before you make your way north. Sample some local wines at Sevenhill Cellars, the oldest existing winery in the Clare Valley. Later visit pioneering Quorn before travelling on to the picturesque Flinders Ranges and dramatic Wilpena Pound.

Day 4: Flinders Ranges

This afternoon travel through Pitchi Richi Pass to Port Augusta and visit the Wadlata Outback Centre.

Day 5: Coober Pedy
Visit Woomera, established in 1947 as an experimental rocket launching site, before travelling to isolated Coober Pedy, arguably the opal mining capital of the world. Visit an underground church and home, and discover how the locals live underground. See an opal cutter at work and browse through the opal displays.

Leaving Coober Pedy behind, cross the state border into Northern Territory and continue to Uluru–Kata Tjuta National Park. This evening enjoy a glass of wine and nibbles as you watch sunset over Uluru. There is the option to join the Sounds of Silence dinner tonight (extra cost) - ask your Tour Director for details.

Day 7: Uluru (Ayers Rock) – Kata Tjuta (Olgas)
Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cutural Centre © Tourism Northern Territory This morning you may wish to join an early tour to view sunrise at Uluru. Afterwards travel by coach to Kuniya Piti, an Aboriginal sacred site at the base of Uluru. Your guide will escort you on a walk to the Mutitjulu Waterhole, pointing out the natural features of the landscape, Aboriginal rock paintings and traditional Aboriginal stories relating to the special place. Experience the sheer size of Uluru as your guide explains the geological formation, Aboriginal history and the flora and fauna unique to this area. Visit the informative Uluru- Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre (pictured).
This afternoon see the massive series of domes known as Kata Tjuta. The walking trail through Walpa Gorge follows the natural creek between two domes. Enjoy sunset with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine followed by a barbecue dinner under the stars. (BD)

Travel to Kings Canyon today. For the energetic, a guided climb to the Canyon rim will be rewarded with magnificent views of Watarrka National Park. Alternatively you may prefer to explore the boulder-strewn Canyon floor for an easier shady walk. From a lookout at your hotel enjoy another colourful desert sunset, across Carmichael Crag.

Day 9: Alice Springs
Leaving Watarrka National Park behind, travel through to Alice Springs. See the sights of Alice Springs, including the Royal Flying Doctor Service, School of the Air and the Telegraph Station. Stop for panoramic views from Anzac Hill (see picture above Price Panel, below).

Day 10: Aboriginal Culture – Alice Springs Desert Park
This morning spend time with a local Aboriginal guide on a Desert Discovery Tour to gain an understanding of their unique culture. In the afternoon travel to Standley Chasm, Simpsons Gap, and the Alice Springs Desert Park. (B)

Day 11: Depart Alice Springs
Tour concludes after breakfast. Your airport transfer is included (flights can depart any time). (B)

Adelaide
- here the climate is pleasantly warm with mild winters and warm to hot summers. The warmest months (December - February ) will captivate you with carefree outdoor dining, perfect days on the beach or just alfresco cafe hopping. Spring and autumn bring pleasant, mild days and nights to enjoy. The average maximum summer temperature is 28Ί Celsius, while in winter it drops to about 15Ί Celsius. Summer temperatures in the Outback regularly reach 40Ί Celsius.

has a desert climate - mostly dry, with brilliant blue skies all year. Autumn and spring will give you sunny days with cloudless skies and crisp, cool nights. Great weather for exploring the sights by foot or in the comfort of a vehicle. Summer is the time when Central Australia is at it's most vivid, with hot days and balmy nights. December to February are the hottest months - usually more that 35Ί Celsius - so take a hat and sunscreen.
