ITINERARY: Alice Springs to Uluru (Ayers Rock) - 'Red Centre Discovery'

NOTE: Uluru to Alice Springs is effectively the reverse of this itinerary
Truly Ref. 1414 (Alice to Uluru)      Truly Ref. 1415 (Uluru to Alice)
This Small Group coach tour offers travellers a way to experience the vast, landscapes Central Australia - designed for the young or young at heart who want to actively explore the best of the great outdoors off the beaten track while still enjoying the benefits of an escorted holiday.  Your Small Group adventure is led by an experienced driver/guide who will be on hand to share their extensive knowledge of the local flora, fauna and attractions. Travelling in a small group provides the opportunity for informal questions and discussions with your guide.

Day 1: Arrive Alice Springs
Long distance view from Anzac Hill, Alice Springs
Tour the sights of 'The Alice' including a visit to the historic Telegraph Station. At the Royal Flying Doctor Service you will see how medical aid reaches those who live in the remote outback. Enjoy a panoramic view of Alice Springs from Anzac Hill (see photo) and then visit the largest Aboriginal art gallery in Australia, Mbantua Aboriginal Art Gallery and Cultural Museum.
Accommodation: Chifley Alice Springs Resort, 2 nights. (D)

Day 2: West MacDonnell Ranges
Travel west from Alice Springs following the spectacular West MacDonnell Ranges. Pass the John Flynn Memorial. Stop at Simpsons Gap with its lovely river red gum scenery. Continue on to magical Angkerle (Standley Chasm) for morning tea. Walk into the Chasm along the stony watercourse lined with cycads, ghost gums, acacias and cypress pines. Travel to Ellery Creek Big Hole before arriving at Ormiston Gorge. We travel on to Glen Helen Gorge, a semi permanent waterhole. Enjoy a Ploughman's lunch with fresh damper. Depending on the time of the year a refreshing swim may be possible at one of the waterholes. Nearby is the Mt. Sonder lookout. This beautiful mountain was the subject of many paintings by the famed Aboriginal artist and Arrernte tribesman, the late Albert Namatjira (BL)

Day 3
: Kings Canyon
Viewing Kings Canyon Travel through the Red Centre to Kings Canyon. For the energetic a guided climb to the canyon rim will be rewarded with magnificent views of Watarrka National Park. Or you may prefer to explore the boulder-strewn canyon floor, an easier walk. The sheer red rock face of the canyon soars over 100 metres above lush palm forests, sheltering them from the surrounding desert conditions. The park is a conservation area whose rock holes and gorges provide refuge for over 600 species of plants and many native animals. While the Luritja Aboriginal people have called the area their home for over 20,000 years, it was little known to Europeans until recently.
Accommodation: Kings Canyon Resort. (BD)
Day 4: Uluru (Ayers Rock)
Leaving Watarrka National Park behind you travel through to Uluru - Kata Tjuta National Park. Be awe-struck as you glimpse sight of one of the natural wonders of the world. Uluru stands 348 metres high. This evening enjoy a complimentary glass of wine and nibbles as you watch the spectacular colours of the sunset at Uluru (Ayers Rock) and afterwards an Aussie barbecue under the stars.
Accommodation: Desert Gardens Hotel, Ayers Rock Resort, 2 nights. (BD)

Day 5: Kata Tjuta (the Olgas)
Watch sunrise at Uluru. You will be introduced to the natural and cultural landscapes of this remarkable region.
Then visit the Uluru - Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre before travelling on to the Mutitjulu Waterhole. This afternoon view the massive series of domes known as Kata Tjuta. (B)
