Melbourne,
the state capital of Victoria, is a cosmopolitan, elegant city of fine buildings
famous for its trams, wonderful parks and numerous restaurants. Melbourne was settled by sea traders in Victorian times and
many beautiful buildings from that era remain. The city is on Port Phillip Bay,
on the Yarra River, and in recent years the old dockland areas on the
Yarra have been redeveloped to form a sophisticated and vibrant south
bank area that includes Melbourne's exhibition centre, casino and some
smart shops, cafes and restaurants. The sporting hub of Australia,
Melbourne is the home of Aussie Rules. It has the Melbourne
Cricket Ground and hosts annually the Melbourne Grand Prix and the
Australian Tennis Open. Nearby
are the beautiful Dandenong Ranges and the pastoral and wine growing
Yarra Valley region. Another gem to visit is the old
goldrush town of Walhalla with its delightful Star Hotel.
