ROYAL EXCHANGE HOTEL, Broken Hill, New South Wales
Scroll down to Price Panel ...
Originally a pub, this small, elegant 24 room hotel is situated in Broken Hill's main street.  It has recently been renovated to a very high standard.
Visited personally by Truly Australia staff in mid-2003 it is highly recommended as THE place to stay in Broken Hill, whether before or after some nearby Outback touring or as a unique City Stay experience.
Getting To Broken Hill
Broken Hill is usually accessed by rail or air although it is perfectly possible to self drive.  The Indian Pacific train (Sydney/Adelaide/Perth) calls twice a week at Broken Hill in both directions and there is also a day service from Sydney (approx. 13 hours) once a week.

About Broken Hill and the Royal Exchange Hotel
The hotel makes an ideal base for touring the area (see Broken Hill for touring and accommodation packages)

Several of the outstanding heritage listed historic buildings which make Broken Hill a living museum are on Argent Street, close to the Royal Exchange Hotel. These include the red brick General Post Office, the ornate Town Hall and the Courthouse to name just a few and were all built in the late 1800s during the gold rush.

The town is a thriving art centre as a result of the initiative of the Brushmen of the Bush. Not only are there many galleries of which the City Art Gallery, founded in 1904, is Australia's second oldest art gallery but the streets are graced by public murals and outdoor sculptures. The International Sculpture Symposium, set high on a hill on the outskirts of Broken Hill, consists of sculptures carved form local sandstone by twelve renowned international sculptors and it is a magical place from which to watch the sun setting.  Opals are found in the outlying areas of Broken Hill and they can be purchased at reasonable prices in town.

Broken Hill is home to two uniquely Australian institutions, the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the School of the Air, which provides education from a distance to the children across the vast outback. Both establishments offer tours for visitors.
A short drive northwest of Broken Hill is atmospheric Silverton, everyone's idea of a typical outback town with wide streets, restored old buildings and beautiful scenery.  Silverton has featured in many movies including A Town Like Alice, Mad Max 2, Mission Impossible and Priscilla Queen of the Desert as well as providing a background for innumerable commercials.

The most rewarding excursions are to the diverse National Parks in the area, the most famous being Mutawintji National Park to the northeast of Broken Hill and Kingchega National Park to the southeast. In the former is an outstanding collection of aboriginal rock engravings, paintings and stone arrangements dating back 40,000 years and there is also fascinating scenery with secluded gorges and quiet waterholes, home to a profusion of wildlife.  Kinchega contains  the huge and fluctuating Menindee freshwater lakes system where many water birds can be seen and it is also a splendid recreation area with excellent facilities for sailing, swimming and fishing. This is Broken Hill's “beach resort”.  Further south on the way to Mildura is famous Mungo National Park with its amazingly sculpted coloured sandstone rocks known as the Great Walls of China.

After a day visiting the outback it is a pleasure to return to the cool comfort of  the Royal Exchange Hotel.
