Night time market, Darwin © Tourism Northern TerritoryThe most tropical capital in Australia, Darwin was devastated by Cyclone Tracey on Christmas Day 1974.  Impressively rebuilt, it is a modern, colourful and multicultural city and gateway to the unique sights of the Northern Territory which include the World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park and Uluru, as well as remote Arnhemland.  Darwin is also a good starting point for touring into the ancient and spectacular wilderness area of Western Australia known as the Kimberley and its two main centres, Broome and Kununurra
